Re: SPECTRUM GLASS CLOSING DOWN

To Our Retailers and Professional Studios; It is with heavy hearts and great remorse that we must inform you that we will begin the process of closing Spectrum Glass Company. This has been an extraordinarily difficult decision, and its ramifications were not taken lightly. We are keenly aware of the...

Re: Viewing window in homebrew fibre kiln

Insulated fire brick.

The type of bricks used in most ceramics kilns. I have a lot of them kicking around so that's what I used.

Re: Viewing window in homebrew fibre kiln

My window hole is approx 4" x 6" basically the standard size of an IFB. A peep hole is borderline useless to me.

Re: Viewing window in homebrew fibre kiln

I keep a small flashlight beside my kiln. You shine that into a glowing a kiln and the glass looks almost normal. In otherwords the light from the flashlight let you see the glass as if it wasn't glowing orange. It makes it much easier to see the definition and roundness of the glass in the kiln eve...

Re: Viewing window in homebrew fibre kiln

MY kilns were both made from fibre board rather than blanket however. This may complicate it for you. As the board gave my brick a bit more structure to rest on.

Nice job on yours however.

Re: Viewing window in homebrew fibre kiln

I have built two separate types, on is a bell kiln and other is hinged like yours. The only difference is that the majority of the sides stay on the base and only the top few inches are hinged. (Your design is better) I would still cut a hole into it if that was mine as the ability to peek is invalu...

Re: Viewing window in homebrew fibre kiln

What Bert said..... The two homemade kilns I built I cut a hole and placed a insulated fire brick into the hole. I mounted a handle onto the brick to make removal quick and easy. It works great. The one kiln was made from expanded metal (sounds like yours) and the other was made from rectangular ste...

Re: Quartz tubing

I have quartz tubes in both of the kilns I have built. The tubes are quite thin maybe 2mm thick, the elements fit rather snug into the quartz tubes.

I've bought the elements as well as the quartz from duralite.

Re: FLashed Stained Glass Breaking

Another strange thing with speed and unevenness. I was making some oval door handles out of 19mm float glass. These were about 9" x 6" I could fire these in my kiln from room temp to 1500F in an hour and half easily. That was until I drilled the two holes into them for mounting. Once there...

Re: relays for kilns

In my mind a high limit setup is just another level of complexity and possible frustration that most consumers don't need and will cause more problems than solve. If your kiln has two relays then if one does get stuck the worst that'll happen is 50% of the available heating capacity will be on. That...

Re: OOPS!

Been there, done that.

I even posted a picture here years ago, asking to guess what it was. It looked like a cool piece of bubble glass.

I caught it before it got too hot , it was destroyed but interesting.

Re: kiln building

I've built three kilns all based on exactly what Brad had stated. Good luck, but it's not that hard. The first kiln I built I figured I'd need to change this or that to perfect it. 9 years later it was still firing perfectly. I recently moved out of my large commercial space and had to downsize and ...

Re: Scratch-like lines across bowl

Those look like glass cutter score marks to me. Did you score the glass and not actually run the score (break the glass along the score)?

The look too parallel and defined to me to be kiln wash marks.

Re: Firing aborted; can I refire

I'd think that the black specs were ash that came from the SHELF PAPER. This likely happens every time you use shelf paper but completely burns out by the time you see the finished results.
