We cast this piece upside down in a one piece mold. It cast really well so it didn't take a lot of finish work topside. I think I went over it pretty thoroughly with the fine craytex bullets after using a small fine diamond bit to remove any rough spots. Then used the composite upright wet wheel to ...

color combos

I'm trying to achieve a medium pink. Using BE, the erbium pink is very pretty but not the richer color I want. The old Lt. Pink and the new Lt. Pink Striker are way too dark. I have tried mixing erb pink and lt pink together also tried adding neo-lavender to the mix as well as lt purple and lt plum ...

I have a gallery page on my web site called 'recent work'. It lists all the pieces I have available for sale either thru me directly or thru the gallery that has it with price and contact info. As Phil said, as long as you sell at the same price that gallery sells it at, there should be no complaint...

Our bread and butter is the architectural work (carved and etched). My big joke is that we make our money on the etched glass and we throw it away on the pate de verre. I started out working on the pate de verre as time allowed which wasn't much. Then I devoted Fridays to it. I loved Fridays. Then m...

1. I never use powder in my PdV...the colors turn out too dense, opaque, and ugly so if that's what you used for your glass orchid I'm not surprised you didn't like the results. I use frit size 1 and 2. 2. In my conversation with the Daum artist, he said they filled their molds cold with loose dry f...

Thanks Gale. I guess about 7 or 8 years of stolen days from the architectural work. I'm particularly pleased with this one. 'Lizard with Baby Blue Eyes' (an early spring bloomer in my yard).

I'm assumming you used transparent glasses. The 'opacity' is caused by all the tiny air bubbles trapped by the fine frit. It's not really opaque (if you do one with opaque glass you can see the difference right away), but translucent. This translucency is what gives pate de verre it's distinctive lo...

I met one of Daums artists/craftsmen many years ago when we were just starting out learning the technique. I asked him how they do their glass. He told me they use one piece molds casting upside down and then pour the frit in dry. He showed me a sample of the frit they use and it was comparable to B...

Hmmm...wish I knew the answer to this one...nature, nurture, culture, economy, they probably all enter into the mix. Guess I'd start with the question, Why does our culture not take women artists as seriously? And then I'd ask, what can we do as women and men do to correct the problem? Well, consid...

4. That said, the originators of patent laws already worked through all of the objections and counter-objections launched in this thread. The laws exist to protect people precisely like Susan from knockoffs. That's the purpose of copyrights, to protect artists/writers. The purpose of patents is to ...

Well, I'm against it. I think it's silly. You can't patent art. You can't patent creative expression. People aren't going to copy someone whose work doesn't sell. And if you are already selling at the level that makes anyone want to copy you, then you have already achieved your goal. So what's the p...

CraftHouston 2003: National merit award winner

I'm sure this will come as no surprise to anyone who knows Catharine Newell's work...she won one of the three $1000 Merit Awards for her 'Glimpses of Mr. Hidcote' at the show.

I got bubkis. No sour grapes, I'm pleased to have a piece in the show.

Here's my rant... We also do architectural etched and carved glass. We describe ourselves as being an art studio. I get designers who want plain sandblasting or stripes or grids (none of which we do). Some of them get a little attitude when I tell them that. Finally one day, I was trying to explain ...
