it would be far better to obtain a cheap pottery kiln off ebay or craigslist, for all these reasons.

Re: melted glass on stainless former

[quote="jerry keller"]I had a meltdown in the kiln, and have melted glass embedded on a stainless steel former. I tried to get it off by putting in a kiln to 900 degrees, then dropping it into water - a lot of the glass came off, but some remains. I do not want to sandblast it in my booth,...

Re: pottery in glass kiln

1st, will your kiln get to 1830? second, you'll need to know the correct temp for the glaze. cones don't correspond to a known temp, they are time AND temp. you should fire a cone that you're going to use, get to top temp, and see when it bends. some glazes need a certain amount of top temp in order...

Re: Advice on buying a new 120V kiln :(

i place a small desk fan under the control box on a cement floor. this blows the air cooled by the cement upwards through the box. since i've done that, i haven't had a relay failure since.

Re: Calculate weight

it weighs lots more once you water it. you also need drainage out the bottom.

Re: stacking molds in kiln

stick them out on your driveway for a few hours in the sun, or put them on top of your kiln when it's firing. there's no need to take them that high just to dry

Re: Health warning

asbestos undisturbed is not a problem. it's only when you move it around or cause the fibers (fibres) to become airborne, does it become a problem. you could enclose the wire sheath, or paint it with a thick coat of latex paint, in order to prevent problems.

the smaller it is, the less important annealing is. for magless's, you don't have to anneal at all.

Re: FLEX or SUHNER ????

if it was making internal grinding noises that were a lot louder then usual, the bearings could be worn out. in that case, it would cost more to fix the replace.

Re: ROCIPROLAP

a piece of 5mm or so neoprene cut to be the height of the sides and long enough to fit inside the ring?

you can get this at good fabric stores perhaps, as they make clothes out of it, or wetsuits. my car seat covers are neoprene, so perhaps a shop that repairs car interiors would have some.

Re: My angle grinder is broken!

what is broken? there are carbon posts (called brushes) inside them that get replaced as they wear down with use. when they're too short, the motor won't run. if you're looking for a replacement, you should call up either a place that sells granite countertops, or does headstones. they'll know where...

Re: Distressed look for Iridized glass

cracks in irid are caused by the glass underneath it stretching. the metal layer doesn't, so when the glass under it moves, the cracks appear.

also address your annealing schedule. the one you have is for flat glass, not molds. you have something almost 2" thick. it has to cool pretty slowly.

Re: Frit Casting Project Help

1:yes
2: frit, when fired, can lose 50% or more of volume
3: any wax left over will burn off when heated up. usually it's steamed out, but that leaves traces that don't matter when firing.

not knowing what you're using, yes, holes at the low points will solve bubbles appearing at those points.

you can use any kiln as long as it's on something fireproof, or open to the air. there's nothing special about a stand.

Re: Combing with Reactives

just remember: unless you have a shutoff switch on the door/lid, part of the comb handle should be wood. this would be pretty dangerous if you didn't have a shutoff switch if you accidentally hit an element.

wood also doesn't conduct heat very well.
