Re: New Fiber Kiln Prefiring
I am using thin shelf paper I purchased on a huge roll from Delphi a few years ago (I don't think it was any particular brand name) - does not do this in my brick kiln. I used it on the bottom of the kiln itself, I also used a fiber board with hardener on it and o...

Re: New Fiber Kiln Prefiring

you're picking up the pattern of whatever you're firing on, and tiny particles of that (if you're using wash, fiber, or some sort of paper). it's not devit. you can't get the bottom of a fused item to be as shiny as the top.

Re: Re-using 1/8" fiber paper

yes, but it's lost its stiffness. you could wet it with a sugar solution (7up), roll it out flat, and let it dry (or use a slab roller if you have access to a ceramic's shop).

i use wads of it as filler in bottle necks if i'm flattening a bunch for friends.

if the coating is smooth, i just put on a couple layers of new wash. i only remove it if there's divots that i can't work around.

Re: Searching for a scale accurate to .1g

HF is hit or miss. the quality control from item to item, even identical shipments, is off. look through some of the bins of items, and you can pick out the lemons of the group. it wouldn't surprise me that 2 scales wouldn't have near the same accuracy. they do have a good return policy though, so i...
There are some questions this thread raises for me:

Why is 220V not a readily available alternative here? For all the money that's being spent on equipment, is an electrical upgrade to 220V in order to maximize the investment possible? I upgraded my primary se...

Re: S/Steel tube ,patten bar

you can heat it afap. it isn't solid yet, and even if it does crack, do you care? it's going to move inside the tube when it gets soft anyway. since it's packed so well, you will have to hold at the top temp a long time to ensure that the heat reaches the middle. treat it like a 45mm thick casting f...

Re: Compressor recommendations?

15amps means you need a 20 amp circuit. 5.5 cfm isn't very much, and whilst it can be used, you're going to have to wait as it recharges. speedair has a very good reputation from long ago, but i don't know what it is in recent times.

no, except the silvering or paint may chip on the edges. use a very fine grit head on your grinder and belts.

Re: Glass Painting & Firing Questions
Hi there, thanks Don & Bert for the helpful responses, appreciate it! Don, re the cleaning, the acetone seemed to leave a kind of residue, so I gave up on that quick! The ethyl alcohol cleaned better, with less residue, but afterwards there was a fair amount of resist...

Re: ramping schedule

with an infinite switch, you can't really tell what the temp is. you can get a thermocouple with a readout so that you can tell, and adjust the switch to change the temps. you'll have to do some anticipating, because when you change the switch, the temp rate won't be affected for some time, so is ex...

Re: Can I replace my plug?

what does it look like, and what is the amperage of each kiln? there are standards for plugs, each can carry a certain amperage and are designed so you can't plug something into a line where it shouldn't be plugged into. if your existing kiln takes a higher amperage than the new one and the line is ...
