Re: Painters:Badger blender static?

One of my greatest frustrations in painting glass is the appearance of dust and hairs which seems to occur most often when using a blender. I remember in a physics class where the teacher rubbed a glass rod with some fur to give it a large static charge. Could this be happening with the badgerhairs...

I use the three small sifters shown at the top of this page on Thompson Enamels site. These sifters are plastic with metal mesh and wire handles. http://thompsonenamel.com/products/tools/grinding.htm They are 40 mesh and all BE powders will go through them and they don't drip powder. You have to ta...

Re: how do I use Hanovia gold?

I recently purchased a small bottle of Hanovia glass gold and a Kemper tool. The shop where I purchased them did not know how to use them. Do I apply the gold and then fire in kiln? If so, at what temp and for how long? What general precautions should I take? Any help greatly appreciated :? elizabe...

Oak Bros., Antique Glass Repair (Mike Malovich) in Tacoma, WA are experts on this. phone 253-752-4055 With replacing the original glass you need to have the glass pristine and they do a great job with this. Re: Using Steel Bars for molds

I have available to me different diameters and lengths of steel bars not SS. These bars would run from 2-6 inches in diameter and from about 1-6 inches in length. My question is can these be used succesfully to slump over? I am thining of laying a bar on its side and slumping over it to get a curve...

flux maturing temp

Cynthia I am skeptical that spray A will look good fired only to 1350. I just had a conversation with Center de Verre Marty. He said that as long as BE is kept below 1375, he never gets devit. I fired my dichro frit tests covered with crystal clear frit to 1375, held for an hour and got clean tiles....

Sounds to me like the glass expanded enough in the long direction during ramp up to jam against the dams before it got soft. Then it softened, fused and settled. That's when the ends turned up, since they were in contact with the fiber paper, maybe even tightly jammed against it, while the frit was...

I've fired on blanket without anything added (it never occurred to me to coat it). It is a pretty strong texture and different kinds of blanket give different textures. I like the look, but I've noticed that people don't like to touch it. As with most fiber, it feels ok on float, less so on Bullsey...

Re: fire polishing with torch

I am sure that this has been discussed before, but I was wondering if any of you do fire polishing with a torch as opposed to in the kiln and if so, do you anneal in the kiln? In theory, you can heat the glass to above 1000º F in a kiln and then torch it to fire polish temp and then place it back ...

damn dam

I tried making a dam for the first time and the result was kind of strange. I had a 3 layer design for a desktop 77.5" x 28.75". 2 layers of 10mm float with a layer of coarse homemade frit in the middle. The front and back were not dammed only the two ends. I made the dams with firebricks ...

Bert- Is it really cheaper? Or is it merely necessary when shows limit your wattage? I usually pay for 2K watts= 35 to 40 50watt spots. Your transformer cost? And how heavy/big? I'm working with BE glass. Hi all. I have been using a simple plaster, silica mold mix with good results. I have read about additives such as fiberglass mesh for bigger molds, and for more durability. white mineral deposits

I got a call today from a client who has had one of my fountains for a couple of years now. She complained of white deposits on the glass that won't come off. Melissa, If you're stripping the diamonds off your bits, it's probably technique related. Are you drilling hand-held or in a drill press? The technique is to almost tap the bit into the glass and through a pool off water. Build a dam around our hole with the rope-style window caulk or with electric...
