Re: Which glue is best for glass to glass on sushi plates?
I use superglue when constructing complicated tack-fuses precisely because I can easily peel it off the glass and redo. Superglue has poor sheer strength and can't withstand moisture, which makes it a bad idea for anything involving food (since you've got to wash the plate). Silicone is a much bette...

Re: Square/Squareup Credit Card processing
I use PayPal, and they're great as long as nothing goes wrong...but look out when it does. I got stuck with a fraudulent deal on eBay where PayPal flatly refused to do anything, including assisting the police, and I know of at least two cases--one involving a friend--where PayPal assisted in fundrai...

Re: Square/Squareup Credit Card processing
Those might be very early reviews; as I recall they had some issues in the first few months after starting. But I've had a Square for almost two years now, and I've never had a problem. The money's in my account usually on the next business day. They do (or did--you'll have to check their rules now)...

Re: CNC glass scoring from Thomas Carr
So on kind of a sideways note, heard a friend at work talking about a guy who cut granite with a plasma cutter and was trying to figure out how to build a cnc system out of that. Wonder if you could use that kind of rig to cut or shape glass...? A plasma cutter uses a torch, so wouldn't work for gl...

Re: using water pump with MK 100--or just a hose?
I use loclines on either side of the blade, hooked up to a garden hose. A pump came with my saw too, but didn't deliver nearly enough water and frequently clogged. If you scroll down to the bottom of this post on my blog, you'll see a pic of my setup. http://www.morganica.com/bloggery/2012/latest/cu...

Re: Advice on a generic recipe for mold mix, please
"Permanent refractory" and "needs no release" are pretty much mutually exclusive, which makes sense if you think about it. Castalot and Best Mix both require kilnwash or some kind of release. Nothing should go into a mold mix without a reason, and the only time I use a "gene...

Re: Kiln wash mixed into investment
Yes, you can add kilnwash to R&R910. Works fine, but not 20%, more like 3-5%. What works better, though, is to kilnwash an R&R910 mold after it sets. I use a thinnish coat of Bullseye kilnwash. If the mold shape is appropriate, I'll dump in the whole batch, swirl it around and pour it out ab...

Re: Borax spray on plaster molds
So...Where is this occurring? On the side against the mold? On the top (away from the mold?) On the edges? What kind of schedule are you using and, in particular, how are you drying your mold? In my experience with casting soda-lime into a mold, the worst scum/devit occurs with opal powders wet-pack...

Re: dichro problems - Wrong glass cleaner
I think that if a glass cleaner could cause a chemical reaction that detached dichroic coating from glass, especially a biodegradeable one, a lot of fusers would be in trouble. ;-) I think it's more likely that a section of the dichro sheet has problems--possibly the glass was contaminated when the ...

Re: Go and stop and go? Or just go?
Depends on what I'm doing. I almost never hold before 1100F when fusing. In casting, I will program one or more holds on the way up, one between 240-300F to eliminate water in the mold (and that one can last for 24 hours or more), another around 700-800F to burn out organics, if I'm re-casting again...

Re: Frit Compatibility
It's not just plain lunacy, but it certainly isn't the best idea on the planet. I've made tack-fused tempered glass pieces coming from multiple sources--the little cubes--that held and exhibited remarkably little stress under the scope. But that's probably the exception, not the rule. I pretty much ...

Re: Design Question
It's probably worth testing a few times to see what works best for what you have in mind. You can most certainly make pieces with a single 3mm layer of glass--I do it all the time--or even with a single layer of thin glass. This piece, for example, is 20 inches in diameter, made on a single layer of...

Re: Ring Saw Help
I didn't like the Taurus 2 because it spit a lot of water, as you noted, but also because I kept breaking blades on the Taurus 2 and I don't have that problem with the 3. The Taurus 3 has a slightly larger working area and greater working depth, and I don't get as much sprayback with the T3. OTOH, i...

Re: Ring Saw Help
I'm looking at these saws too -- and have some more questions! About how fast do they cut -- how long would it take to make a 6" straight cut, for example? I know people say that ring saws aren't the best tool for pattern bars, but would they work for the occasional project (with the mega/fusi...

The ones in the picture range from about 6-8 inches across and maybe 6 inches high on the stands. I have some that are about 18-20 inches high and perhaps 14-16 inches in diameter; the look changes as you get bigger. The stands are made with the same process but slumped over small bowls without any ...

Re: Wasser- Is it compatible with 90 or 96??
Lynne, I built up a big point-by-point rebuttal thing yesterday and erased it; it's pretty obvious that if there are two schools of glassists, you're in one and I'm in the other, and I'm not sure there's much point in debating. Fact rarely wins out over belief or superstition or whatever you want to...
