Ideas for Breaking Bottles

I am trying to break wine bottles to get large chunks of glass to do some fusing. I have recently tried to wrap the bottle in a plastic bag, and strike it with a hammer. The result more shattering, with a lot of small pieces, and very few large pieces. Any ideas of how I can break these bottles and ...

Re: Booth display

I started using Gridwall, and love it. They have many different size shelf brackets, peg hooks, etc. Other things I just put zip ties on the side of my tent, and hang them with "S" hooks. The zip ties stay on the tent frame when I tear down. Then next show, I just hang with the "S&quo...

Re: Workbench?

Here is a plan I used to build a couple "cheap" (~$30 I believe) workbenches.

You can go to the big box home improvement stores, and have them do all the cuts for you.

Re: Kiln Shelf Spacing

Well, my problem is, I just got this kiln. So getting another one right away would not go over well on the home front. I don't see it as a huge issue with adding a shelf(unless I am missing something), buy it, cut it and drop it in - save about a grand :). I only need 2 sides to be wider. Th...

Kiln Shelf Spacing

My kiln shelf has 1/2" space from the wall to the shelf. I was thinking of cutting a new shelf a bit bigger, which would give me more shelf space for some projects. This would give me only 1/4" space between the shelf and the wall. Anyone see any issue with this? Also, any good ideas for w...

Re: Kiln Wash on Walls

Kiln is level. I did have one roll slightly the other day. It did not touch the wall, but this is what caused me to worry about the walls.

Kiln Wash on Walls

Hi, I have a paragon glass kiln with heating elements in the lid. I started slumping bottles, and am concerned about bottles rolling into the walls while firing. I put a small piece of thinfire under the sides, but still worry about rolling. Can I put kiln wash on the walls in case the bottles were ...

Re: removing bottle labels Q?

I have 2 methods. 1. Generous scoop of Oxyclean in a 5 gallon bucket. I place 5-6 bottles in bucket, let soak overnight. Many of the labels float off. The stubborn ones, I just scrape off with plastic scraper. 2. Apply heat gun to surface of label for about a minute. Peel label off. Label is preserv...

Kiln Cooling

I have been playing around with my new kiln and slumping bottles I had a question on kiln cool down. Is there a temperature at which you open the door to help expedite cooling? I have some people say to "crack" the door at ~400 degrees, and ok to open at ~200. What do you do? Is there any ...

Kiln Shelf Question

I bought my first kiln from Paragon. The kiln arrived shortly before the holiday. They included the shelf, but unfortunately there were no legs in the shipment. They are closed for the holiday, and I am eager to do some playing around  I probably won't get the posts from them for over a wee...

Re: Slumping technique question

Paulas, I did this with some vodka and wine bottles. I simply sliced them with my saw, and took them to an area glass studio that rents their kilns. They placed them on the shelf and fired them for me. I don't recall what the schedule was. Once they were done, the tops were round, and the backs were...

Re: Kiln Recommendation

Thanks for the feedback. I ended up buying the Trio from Bigceramic store. Hope to have it by the end of the week. It looks like it will hold two bottles pretty easily (17.75" x 10.75"). It is a Paragon unit.

Can't wait to get it and mess up some glass :D

Kiln Recommendation

I do cold work with recycled bottles. I am looking to expand into slumped bottles (possibly other types of recycled glass fusing - down the road), and investigating kilns for this. I know very little about kilns (other than what I have read on the internet - so I should be an expert right? :D ). I w...
