Studio Voyeurism
Paul, Thanks for sharing that site. It was interesting to look through. Although my studio is usually very messy, I'm glad to see that I'm not alone. It would be interesting for this Board to have an interesting feature, where we sent in photos of our own studios. Based on an earlier post I think th...

Dull lines of edge of clear casing
One possible cause is when the piece of clear glass you put on the top is not a slightly larger than the rest of the cabachon. When the clear glass top is not large enough to completely cover the cabachon, you get a mark on the edge.

dp sharpies burn off w/o leaving marks?
China markers wash off when I'm sawing before I've completed the cut. It helps if I cover the marker with a chap stick or vaseline, but that's not foolproof.
I always wash it off before I fire.

I guess my questions is, do I need a special kind of smoke alarm in the kiln area?

What's the best/recommended smoke alarm for a studio?
I don't have any kind of smoke alarm in my studio/converted garage right now and decided it was time to get with the program.
Thanks for your help.

what do you use to cover your cutting table???
Dave, I started a topic a few days ago on Studio Design which I believe is the same thing as your Workshop set up would be. You might want to take a look at it. I've received a lot of good suggestions. And, I'm still looking for more. Back to the Morton Cutting System, I was the one who said I cut o...

what do you use to cover your cutting surface?
The Morton Cutting System (the plastic mesh stuff) I wouldn't leave home without it.

Deb,
I'm concerned about the dismal number of responses. Could it be the title? If the traffic doesn't pick up, you might consider a change. Just a suggestion.

I really appreciate all of the suggestions you've provided. "Setting Up Shop" is on it's way from Amazon. I hadnh't specifically thought about storage of finished goods, right now everything goes into my trailor, but I won't always being doing retail shows. :) So storage in the studio is s...

I live outside of Dallas, and could meet you if heading west out of Houston made more sense than heading north to pick me up. I think finding the 7-10 days when most of us will be free will be the biggest challenge but I'm all for it, so count me in. There's at least one at couple of more I know who...

With a new coffin kiln on order, I'm taking this opportunity to consider designing my 400 square foot garage studio rather than just piece-mealing it as I have so far. So I would appreciate all comments; what you've done right and what you've done wrong. I've already installed a sink. I'm thinking o...

Best day for a show?
I've had a different experience. I've done private shows in a friend's psychiatric office on Friday afternoon and evenings. We were limited to that time frame because that was when she didn't see patients. When we choose weekends when nothing else was going on in town we had very good turn out. We w...

Putting weird stuff in my kiln
You can try putting heavy leaves, small pieces of a cedar branch under a piece of clear dichroic, dichroic side down. Be sure to vent kiln for the first 1000 degrees. You'll get a subtle kiln carving in the dichroic. Heavier pieces like the cedar work better than normal pieces like a regular leaf. A...

Lauren,
Sorry for the late reply, but I've been out all afternoon. As others have alreadly said, erbium pink is just too pale.
Last spring I had a commission to make a blue ribbon pin for a child abuse prevention charity, It's an interesting challenge. Good luck Lauren.

Coping with "artist abuse" at shows
The real trick is being able to tell in advance which shows will be in the upscale communities with the appreciative audiences and which won't. Once you get that down (and share the secret with me) you'll be much happier and wealthier.

Lauren,
Personally, I don't think either of the BE transparent pinks are very pink once they are fired. BE 0301 pink opal is a good mid range pink.
Hope this helps.
