I keep on thinking of a comparison between glass and a guitar. Anybody that buys a guitar gets the exact same thing... six stings attached to a resonating box...we all start with the same six strings. I had a Martin D-28 ( an incredibly beautiful guitar) that I could not play very well. I sold it t...

All the old blues masters from the deep south played with an emotion that has become the standard on the only instruments that were available. I somehow don't think they were top of the line instruments. I guess I am looking for the emotion rather than the technique (or tools/instruments). Could no...

Several years ago, the head of the US patent office made a statement that nothing is new anymore. The chairman of IBM said not too many years ago that there would never be a need for people to have computers in their own homes. These broad statements are from intelligent people who didn't have a cl...

I think the difference of opinion may fall along the lines of truck drivers and designers. I understand what you are saying. My appearance of a somewhat jaded attitude probably stems from my past technical background where if you really dig, very, very few things are revolutionary. Most things are ...

Re: Interesting Question.......here's my 2 nanocents....

One of the miraculous things about glass is that there is so much that hasn't been done. . You miss my point. For example, my current work involves using glass on edge in lots of strips. Is that unique? Of course not. Is my interpertation and experimentation in this method unique? Probably. It has ...

Done before? Well yes and no

I would agree with Paul that you should not use "been there, done that" as an excuse not to explore. All of us should push our craft as much as we possibly can. If you are in your comfort zone...you aren't progressing. (Quote..."Never confuse motion with progress." Albert Einstie...

Teaching

I have to agree with both Paul and Jim and would also add a comment on teaching. I've had a number of opportunities to teach in technical field I use to be in. Nothing opened my eyes on my subject more for me than being an instructor. For one, it forces you to organize your thoughts, methods, etc. i...

Interesting Question.......here's my 2 nanocents....

I've taken a number of classes now from lots of outstanding instructors. I always felt, I was taking the class because I wanted to learn the techniques. It would be absurd to think you would take a class and then not use the technique. Now, would I want to copy the instructors work? No way. For star...

Bee 4x104 WBS

I have the Bee WBS and it is by far one of the best and most used tools in my studio. C.R. Laurence sells this unit as well as one of their own. When you look on the CRL website the Bee unit is the free standing green unit. The CRL unit is blue and is made to be wall mounted. That is fine as you kno...

Help, please! :!: http://www.pbase.com/bjcashman/kiln_element OUCH!! Now I see what you mean. Looks like ...

Re: Sand Cloud help?

I have that Harbor Freight blast cabinet. No pressure pot. Using shop vac. as dust collector. The dust cloud in the cabinet drives me nuts. Any suggestions? How do you guys handle this? Tony? Anybody? Thanks, Barbara Hi Barbara, One thing you might do is get better lighting for the inside of the ca...

Re: Another Kiln Repair Q

I have an element that has crept out of its channel in the side of my 'round' Paragon. The wire is particularly stiff and thick and I have not been able to stretch or pinch it, even while warm, to get it back in the channel. It's just hanging out there. I have heard of a special plier that is used ...

Re: Tim

This is hard to do verbally. I think I should try to be a little clearer. The metal flange, when I screw it on to the bolt, covers the entire bolt. So, I either have the wrong part & need something else, or I should unscrew the flange and then screw the plastic backing pad/velcro dealy back on....

Thanks to all!!

Lots of good ideas and comments. Thanks to all. For a while there I was going nuts as I thought I'd cut my finger tips on the glass. This last round I knew that was not the case but the tips of both of my thumbs split open in a couple of places and I don't need to tell you how much that hurt as you ...

My hands are killing me.....

Not sure if this is a SPAB type post but I have to believe that there are others out there suffing the same. I've been doing a lot more cold working to my work, now that I have the "toys" to allow me to do so. I've also discovered that my hands are a disaster area. Being a guy (ARH, ARH, A...

Art vs Engineering Classes

While I've taken more engineering classes than I care to think about I've only taken a few art classes so my experience on that (art) particular subject is somewhat limited, here are my observations: Art, unlike most other endeavers, is very hand's on. One of the most frustrating things in the art c...
