Have you tried using sand box sand as a seperator? It works great if you don't care about the back. I know this sounds crazy, but have you ever read the MSDS for children's play sand? Or even read the warnings on the label? Here's a sample, from the MSDS for play sand made by Quickrete: "Conta...

Dani, let me elaborate on my earlier answer. An S corp dividend is distributed via a K-1 document, which shows up on the owner's personal tax form as ordinary income reported on Form 1040, line 17. The term "dividend" can be confusing, it's not at all like a dividend from a C Corp or a mut...

So what's the tax rate on dividend income these days? Dividends from S corporations are treated as ordinary income, line 17 of the 1040. (not the same as "dividends" from C corporations, which are reported on Schedule B and line 9 of the 1040. Neither are subject to FICA. Tax simplificati...

Yes, you need to check for stress. That's especially true if the items are being sold. Cracks can show up right away, they can show up tomorrow, or they can show up months from now. It's not a major expense to check for stress. Just get some polarized film for a few dollars. There's lot's on this in...

The main gas-fired kilns I'm aware of that are used for glass are used for firing glass paints and enamels on one layer of glass, not for casting. These can fire a single layer to 1200 very quickly (under 10 minutes), but I'm not sure they heat evenly enough to do casting and fusing on items thicker...

Re: "S" corporation

An artist friend has told me I need to hire a financial planner and become an s corporation to help with my tax liability. Has anyone done this? And in general does anyone have tips on reducing ones overall tax liability. Tax free investments, business restructuring, etc. I don't have any major pur...

Jayne Persico's book is probably the best out there (there's not much else to choose from). It's very basic, mostly straightforward fusing and wire-wrapping. It has some brief introductory material and about 10 jewelry projects. The book is around 78 pages long. If you're looking for information on ...

One more question...how do you store the unused clay? Should it be put in a fridge? or basement? I've looked for a message board on clay but can't seem to locate one. Wrap the clay in plastic -- a garbage bag works great. Double wrapping is even better. If it dries out, you can sprinkle water on it...

I don't see how the kiln would impact it, either, but then I'm no expert. I can understand the phone, but of course if your network is properly shielded that shouldn't be a problem either.

Sorry I couldn't offer any easy solution.

The brand I use for the home base (where the signal comes from) is called Actiontec http://www.actiontec.com/ The reason I use it is that it was the one that my phone company said worked best with their equipment (I'm DSL, remember). It's 802.11b, which is fairly standard but no longer state-of-the-...

You'd be better to fire as high as your kiln allows (at least to 1500), rather than air dry. If you air dry only, you'll have trouble when you go to use the mold with glass. That's because most clays will shrink 10 to 20% when fired -- you have to make them shrink before you use them with glass.

Re: UGH! I HATE my wireless network!

We have cable internet to the house and that works just fine. Anyone have a wireless internet that works? Yes, I have a wireless network in my house that works fine. We're set up for up to four people to be online at the same time. There's no noticeable decline in performance. I have a DSL connecti...

In the case of Armstrong, the glass used to made in the US, but is now often made in China. The COE could be almost anything. Many people have reported that although the sheets are marketed as all 104 COE, many of them are not compatible with each other. I'd suggest you do some basic compatibility testing with the sheets you want to use, especially if you're making larger pieces.
