Yes, you need to check for stress. That's especially true if the items are being sold. Cracks can show up right away, they can show up tomorrow, or they can show up months from now. It's not a major expense to check for stress. Just get some polarized film for a few dollars. There's lot's on this in...

The main gas-fired kilns I'm aware of that are used for glass are used for firing glass paints and enamels on one layer of glass, not for casting. These can fire a single layer to 1200 very quickly (under 10 minutes), but I'm not sure they heat evenly enough to do casting and fusing on items thicker...

Re: "S" corporation
An artist friend has told me I need to hire a financial planner and become an s corporation to help with my tax liability. Has anyone done this? And in general does anyone have tips on reducing ones overall tax liability. Tax free investments, business restructuring, etc. I don't have any major pur...

Jayne Persico's book is probably the best out there (there's not much else to choose from). It's very basic, mostly straightforward fusing and wire-wrapping. It has some brief introductory material and about 10 jewelry projects. The book is around 78 pages long. If you're looking for information on ...

One more question...how do you store the unused clay? Should it be put in a fridge? or basement? I've looked for a message board on clay but can't seem to locate one. Wrap the clay in plastic -- a garbage bag works great. Double wrapping is even better. If it dries out, you can sprinkle water on it...

The brand I use for the home base (where the signal comes from) is called Actiontec http://www.actiontec.com/ The reason I use it is that it was the one that my phone company said worked best with their equipment (I'm DSL, remember). It's 802.11b, which is fairly standard but no longer state-of-the-...

Re: UGH! I HATE my wireless network!
We have cable internet to the house and that works just fine. Anyone have a wireless internet that works? Yes, I have a wireless network in my house that works fine. We're set up for up to four people to be online at the same time. There's no noticeable decline in performance. I have a DSL connecti...

In the case of Armstrong, the glass used to made in the US, but is now often made in China. The COE could be almost anything. In the case of Youghiogeny, people report that they generally don't have good luck fusing it. It either devitrifies, turns muddy, or causes other problems and some say the sh...

Graham's book is very hard to find. From time to time he sends me a few (I have a standing order for as many as he will send), but he hasn't sent any copies in months. I don't know any place to get the book (Whitehouse doesn't even have it), but you MAY be able to track down a very expensive copy th...

Most fiber blanket is good to about 2300 degrees F. It's available from any place that sells refractory materials, or from most glass or pottery suppliers. Check the yellow pages in your area -- there are lots of refractory suppliers in your area. For the outside of a kiln, the temperature probably ...

Re: POT DROP
I am trying my first drop pot this weekend and wonder what i drop it on. In the archive, they had mentioned that the BE thin fire will not stand up to the glass moving accross the surface at that high of a temperature, but i am wondering if kiln wash will stand up as well? any info (or tips) that y...
