It's a shame that the shape has to be cut out. Lots of time there! Or you could get the basic paw jet-cut I suppose. What are you doing now?

Every kiln fires differently and cold spots are definitely a possibility. Bullseye has a tip sheet on doing a kiln test to check how your kiln fires. I recommend it.

Re: How to you confront the "blank canvas"?
I go to the work table with an idea in mind, but not a final product. I make multiple components so that I can then experiment with the best way to express that idea. Some components make it into the piece, some do not, and I often am prompted to create more components in the middle of working.

Re: Layer and Stack Pre-Fired Stringer Over floral Former?
What you want to do first is test the viscosity of each color (I think from your msg that you have a single color per sheet?) Take 2 kiln bricks, or pieces of kiln furniture, or whatever. Suspend a piece of each color of the stringer so that it's supported on both ends. Then slump. Then you will kno...

nipping thick murrini
Is there such a thing as a mosaic nipper with a bigger opening? I have leponitt (sp?) nippers with great blades, but they are limited in the size that I can cut. Sometimes I get wonderful vitrigraph cane that's about 1/2-7/8 inches thick. The tile saw just eats it (plus it's no fun to hold it to the...

Re: Vitrigraph Kilns
Valerie, mine is mounted on the wall with standard (home depot) sturdy brackets and part of a wire shelf with a hole cut into it. The shelf is steel and just sits on top of the brackets. They are mounted to studs and it's very sturdy. I do have to use a step stool to add the pot but that's not a big...

Re: Vitrigraph Kilns
I have a paragon caldera and love it for this purpose. I have used an EvenHeat Hot Box. Having the controller is nice. I have killed 2 hotboxes this way though - I do a TON of vitrigraph and that kiln isn't really made for that type of heatwork.

Re: Comments on Kathleen Sheard's Book - Great White Egret
I guess it depends why you want the book. If you want to learn Kathleen's technique the book is cheaper than a class...but the class is probably a lot better. It sounds to me like she did a photo documentation of each step in the creation of a piece.

Another thing you can do - depending on your mold - is to put some fiber blanket around the bottom, basically so the glass can't get too close to the mold.
