Re: Drop Vessel on Flat Lap

I think I'm not the only one that tapes handles on the backside. The most difficult part is finding duct tape that won't loose its bond when wet. HIS Glassworks carries some that I use and recommend. I'll take and post pictures today.

Re: soap dish slumping

Your rounded bottom could be caused a couple ways. One is that the slump isn't allowed to go long enough to get the glass all the way down. (most likely) Second: the fiberboard may have some "give" to it allowing the glass to push into it. You should, instead, use a fiber rectangle with th...

Thanks for posting. It's reassuring to learn I'm not the only one that has done this (more than once).

Re: To pop or not?

I have a slightly different take on the problem. It appears the pieces were fired with stringers on the bottom and a couple layers of glass on top. The interface between the stringers and the bottom layer is what trapped air and formed the bubbles which rose to the top. I don't believe a bubble sque...

Re: BE white 0113 in screen melt?

The irid does not burn off. It is metallic and in my experience it floats to the top.

Regular white tends to be wimpy in melts but does not cause cracking.

Re: Need help with Creative Ceramics medium rectangle mold

As it nears the target temp it is essential that you peek. Many times the slump is complete and needs no hold. If you hold for a time after the slump is complete it can blow a bubble even though the air has escaped at the corners. There can still be a tiny amount in the center. Given time that can g...

Re: Source for 36" or Longer Zero Centering Ruler?

Try, online, some of the woodworking supply companies. Some of them carry this sort of thing. I don't remember seeing one that meets your requirements but I wasn't looking either.

Yes, that's normal. The surface in contact with the mold or the kiln shelf will take on the texture of that surface.

Re: Fill in possible gaps?

Since there are two layers of glass there they should not separate. If there is a gap it will not fill. The line between parts will show and since each edge gets slightly rounded they will be a little accentuated. If you put powder or frit in the gap/line it will not flow to fill, since the temp is ...

Re: graphite

Graphite machines very nicely with nearly any cutting tool, even hand tools. The big problem is handling the shavings. When I work it I keep a vacuum constantly cleaning the cutting site so they don't fall or float about.

I like it except for the edges. I'd like to see it trimmed, squared and bordered with about 1" - 2" of black.

Re: Making a mold of a bowl

I think as you flatten the sheet it will stretch and distort the design also thinning out the clay, around the perimeter, significantly if the bowl is deep. This clay will also shrink as you mentioned.

Re: Making a mold of a bowl

I would make a plaster cast of the center medallion. Then roll out a flat circle of clay. Press the medallion into the center and hand carve the petals and scallop the edges. Check for any under cuts that need easing and then bisque the clay when it's dry. This will yield a mold that can be used to ...

Re: Hanovia Gold

Hi Shereen,

I have a 4 oz bottle of Hanovia Brush Cleaner. It lists the contents as: benzyl acetate, camphor, oil of turpentine, toluene and wood turpentine. The cautions make it out to be very nasty stuff.

Let me know if you need some and we can work something out.
