Re: Tips on using Amour Etch for etching?

I have used Armour Etch to get an etched surface on both Spectrum and Kokomo but it takes several applications. Even then it is often not a consistent etch. Brad, is there a commercially available etching cream that does work on art glasses?

Re: Kokomo for fusing?

Thanks Dana but I attended the J. Ring talk and found only some of the information helpful. The information about using Spray A to address devitrification put some folks off from further investigation. It is necessary for security when fusing opals but I only use transparents. The information that I...

Re: Kokomo for fusing?

I apologize for thinking that there might be alternatives for 96 COE users. I didn't understand that Bullseye "believers" would be quite so intolerant of other alternatives. I have a lot of 96 glass that I would like to use and do not plan on switching to Bullseye in the near future if I c...

Re: Kokomo for fusing?

They do number their batches and put the numbers on their full sheets. In the past, I had to get information from them about the batch conformation to assure that I would not get color shift when I slumped their glass. They were recycling some of their waste glass into some of their batches and glas...

Re: Kokomo for fusing?

I posted the initial question and have received a variety of responses. With all respect, most of the responses do not address the original question. I have been using System 96 for many years now and have an inventory that I would like to use with a compatible glass. If the Kokomo will work, it wou...

Kokomo for fusing?

With the demise of Spectrum and the expected high price increases of Bullseye and Uroboros I am exploring the use of Kokomo transparent glasses for fusing. I have heard that the Kokomo glasses are a 96 COE glass. I have been bending their glasses for light fixtures for many years but I have never tr...

Re: SPECTRUM GLASS CLOSING DOWN

I think a closer match to Spectrum than Uroboros is Wissmach. At least it is machine rolled not hand rolled like Uroboros is. Because of that, the sheet sizes are larger.

Re: Crazy Crusher

I am out of town right now but when I get back, I will take a picture of the mixer setup and post it. I am using 1" carbon steel balls instead of stainless balls because of the price. I get the steel balls from Online Metals.

Re: SPECTRUM GLASS CLOSING DOWN

It is easy to use the EPA as a scapegoat. According to Spectrum's statement, it appears that the closing was necessitated more by financial problems associated with the recession and perhaps just glass buying in general. Whatever the reason, I think we need to put our heads together and try to figur...

Re: Removing Rim From A Large Drop

I have cut quite a few larger three dimensional pieces of glass with the sandblaster. I usually mask the cut area with monument stencil (on both sides) and then cut a 1/8" line out where I want the cut to be (on both sides). I then blast half way through from both sides. After the blasting, I g...

Re: Crazy Crushe

I screen out the different particle sizes and then wash the fine powder. I agitate the powder and water and then siphon off the material that remains in suspension. The remaining powder seems usable. As for the question about cleaning the iron out of the frit, I know some in the forum have had luck ...

Re: Crazy Crusher

I did purchase a Crazy Crusher and tried it out. It worked well for crushing small amounts of frit. It would crush a pound at a time after multiple reloadings. I needed to process larger amounts of frit so I purchased a small cement mixer with a plastic drum and used it as a ball mill to process 20 ...

Re: Bullseye & Uroboros air pollution problems

This is hearsay, but what I heard was that Bullseye was quite a bit behind schedule in regard to air quality testing. This plus them maintaining their manufacturing facility in a residential area and not changing their formulations to minimize the amounts of cadmium and arsenic are going to present ...

Re: Slumping small and large projects together

It all depends on the complexity of the molds, the depth of the molds and the types of glass used.

Quartz tubing

I am considering using quartz tube to hang some ceiling elements in and I have a couple of questions. One is whether the wall thickness of the tube makes any difference. In other words, will the thin wall work as well as the thicker wall? The other question is how much larger does the id of the tube...

Re: WORKING WITH LIQUID ENAMELS OR GLASS PAINTS

Havi, I have been screen printing enamels on glass for some 30 years and I have found out that the glass enamel itself is only a small part of the overall complications. I started out as a printmaker too and have found that the complications of screen printing on glass are many. Your screening techn...

Bartlett Model 3K kiln controller

I know that there are a lot of the Bartlett RTC-1000 controllers out there but I was wondering if anyone has any experience with their Model 3K controller. I assume that it is more basic than the RTC-1000 since its cost is so much less, but my needs are basic too. I would appreciate any information.

Re: Stainless Steel for molds?

I have been using stainless molds for quite a few years and they have held up well. I have only used them at slumping temps though and not at fusing temps. I have mainly used 304 SS because it seems to be slightly more available than 316 SS. Tony, have you noticed a significant difference in corrosi...

Re: Bowl Slumping Questions

You might want to do a shallow bowl slump of the piece before you slump it into the deep mold. The shallow bowl will center itself in the deep mold much better than a flat disc will. Even With the shallow mold, be sure to seam the edge that will be contacting the mold.

Re: Outbuilding as a kiln location

Bert and Brad,
Thanks for the info. I have been thinking about getting an RTC 1000 anyway so if it could be wired to shutdown in case of SSR failure, that would be great. The information on the Watlow high temp controller is much appreciated too and the price is right.
