Re: metalic stains after blasting

Thanks Tony. Beautiful colours and finishes. I see they "road freight" and I've sent email questions. I'll also look for metal finishes over here.

Re: metalic stains after blasting

Thanks Brad and Kevin. That is some studio Alex has, and looks interesting works. I can't get right into the pictures though, either website or flickr problem. I'll try the paint as Kevin suggested, maybe like my recent wood stain effort, painters oil paint mixed with gum turps, apply and wipe back....

metalic stains after blasting

Kiln is rewired, experiments starting. I've noticed that after sandblasting, the glass is susceptible to staining, from lots of things, some of it seems permanent even without firing. Thinking of trying copper sulphate, that puts greenish tinge on bronze castings, or rust in a solvent of some type. ...

Re: stencils for sanblasting - photoresist or vinyl cutter

Problem I have is I can't get the old greasy carbon paper, modern stuff won't "write" on these. I use cd pens or permanent markers or wax pencils, but would like a proper carbon type. Paid a lot for some flimsy yellow. Good luck Jen.

Re: stencils for sanblasting - photoresist or vinyl cutter

I ordered off line from this place near Frankston, Vic. Aus. Cheap enough, works and cleans off well, delivery was quick, but a bit of a price hit though. They have heaps of stuff and I found good to talk to when I called in a few year ago. http://www.conect.net.au/metamark-signmask-blue.html

Re: How to polish a tiny spot

If you have a tiny whitish spot after using a 220 grit burr. I found those rubberised polishing burrs messy, and hard to keep to a small spot. If you have a drill with a collet chuck, I love my foredom, you can use small wood or bamboo pieces in it with loose grit. 400 or finer then pumice or cerium...

Re: Autumn of our Reign.

Love this. "that technique was not as important as being engaged" I like the shading , detail and the subject very much. I look like moving away from gas and coal country (seems to do something bad for the people too) to where thay have wind turbines and a tidal turbo generator. I saw a sc...

Re: Potter Wheel as Flat Lap

I bought an old potters wheel, electric, and got a steel plate to fit. Magnetic diamond discs from His, 30 cm I think. Fantastic. Sure the discs could go faster, but I feel I have more control at a slower speed. Only part I miss of an old iron disc and grit is the magic singing sound.

Re: matte finish

I'll agree to all the above. Love a satin finish. Having used the etch cream and the sugar acid dip, I never want to go there again. I found with the cream, when I took the first wipe OK, but taking a second wipe the line where the two met or overlapped, stood out clearly. Happened in the dip also, ...

Re: Advice for Dremel starter set

I bought an "archer" years ago, before I got the foredom. Only problem I had was the speed control failed after a fair bit of use. Had trouble getting the replacement bit and ended up with a part out of another tool. So now there's little control over speed. I think it's easy to get parts ...

Definately save, beg or borrow for the foredom. You wont regret and you'll grow with it.

Re: "Dumbing down" of glass art?

I don't think it's just glass art that is suffering from a dumbing down cycle. We are having arguements about government funding being cut, and the general community isn't that concerned. Just the artists. And Looking hard at the funding over the years there's a huge amount of feel good community stu...

Re: I bought a sandblaster; now what?

Books from Ruth and Norm (dec) Dobbins are full of tech. info and pic's that make you bust to get going. Tony Smith and his site are full of good info. It's an incredibly versatile tool once you get adventurous, and lots of uncovered territory out there.

Re: Finishing ~ Cold Working ~ Cerium Oxide

You could try tin oxide or tripoli, but I think they're like pumice, takes you so close you still need a tiny dazzle from cerium. cuts the amount down though.

but everyone I've asked about potentially putting in an acid polishing line has pretty much screamed when they saw the paperwork and insurance costs and I don't wonder Cynthia. I've done it, years ago, great finish, but the information about the acid and the people in trouble for using it really pu...

Re: Share your water drip techniques and methods

I use plastic pipe and tap, aquarium supplies, from a small hanging bucket. Fencing wire bent and fixed to the bench, hose taped or wired on, bent to anywhere you want it to drip. I prefer big pot plant saucers under. Plastic less likely to scratch. With a cloth or the great plastic webby shelf liners...

I like this sort of stuff. Cut the beaurocracy and get it straight out there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X32TAPulJkM Turns ot I'm not too bad with a paint brush, so I'm going to push that, and print making (glass plates) and when I do glass it will be in the galleries other than glass or direct....

Re: How to Tell Good Art from Bad?

Yep it seems that big prizes and public funding is a form of censorship, in reverse. Sort it out or get rid of it. Too much crap is alienating the public completely. I've heard the game, "if the public like it it can't be art". So get a factory job and pay for it yourself.A smaller populat...
