Re: Expandable drums

I was looking around for an expandable drum and found them for about $7500. I looked at cabbing machines but they are way to expensive for my needs, Has anyone made there own and are willing to share some info. Bob Hi Bob, This is probably way more info than you are looking for and no doubt beyond ...

Re: Denver Kiln?

What would it take to put both the side and top elements on a one, new controller with a mercury relay, maybe an Orton? I had a run-away kiln last year so I am very concerned with safety. Swapping out the controller is definitely possible. As Rick mentioned, the cost/effort to do so is more of how ...

Re: Iridized glass

Sherry, Though I could be wrong, from the picture on the left this glass looks to be from Spectrums Stained glass line vs their 96 fusing line. I/339-6S - Dark Blue/White, wispy, Iridescent. In my experience, taking any of the Spectrum Stained Glass line of iridescents up to fusing temps and firing ...

Re: About reactives - in BE glass

Dear Judith, Unfortunately - I saw it on facebook, and I do not know how to save photos from there. Of course it was my first idea - to download the photo and ask specifically about that. Only thing I can say, is, that it was bunch of photos from a class offered at OAtka, Perhaps it was a combinati...

Your more than welcome. I think most people just getting started in fusing and that have exposure to clay/ceramics think that it's odd you can't find kilns advertised to do both. I know I did when I went to buy my first kiln. I now understand that the dynamics for fusing and working with ceramics ma...

Depending on the size of the kiln you are looking for, Paragon just released a kiln that is being sold with the intention of doing both fusing and firing ceramics. As mentioned in previous messages, many people use ceramic kilns to fuse glass. However they are not sold with the intension of doing bo...

I'm in agreement with other comments here. You have to fit the kiln to the purpose you intend it for. The more difficult part is that those purposes tend to change after you get into fusing. A year ago I bought the GM 1414 for it's size and some of the stuff I say myself wanting to do. And advice gi...

To add to the conversation, in addition to the numbered of stored programs/segements per program/ability to link programs functions, a couple of functions of any controller that I like to use are the ability to add time and/or temp to current segement that is running and also the ability to skip to ...

You have to look at the operating temperature range of the kiln in addition to the type of controller. Most glass kilns don't fire higher than 1800 degrees Farinheight which is not hot enough to fire a majority of the ceramic clays/glazes. Additionally they are usually much shallower to allow even h...

Just an FYI... And what might confuse the matters worse in the future is that right now most (if not all) of the SYSTEM 96 Irrid glass is actually mfg by Urboros. However....Spectrum just announced earlier this month that they are now manufacturing their own Hi-Fire Iridecent (starting with a black ...

Sand Blasting equipment

I have been considering the investment in sandblasting equipment for a while now to do simple etching on dichro and iridecents and for adding textured surfaces to pieces, as well as for use to "fix" pieces where only a sandblaster will get the job done (removal of devit, blasting small hol...

I have the GM 1414 myself and love the kiln and controller. I agree with Charlie's statment about the peepholes being practically useless. And if you think the lid on the 1014 is heavy, the 1414 lid is heavier yet. I really need to rig up a pully system...just dont want to void the warranty :-) In t...

Even Lower Price on Aztec Air Brush

Al, I saw the same model on clearance here in Massachusetts... they must be eliminating that model from the chain. Tony Today I went back to pickup the A4709 kit from Michaels before the three they had last weeksold out. Fortunately, they had one left and it was marked down even further...$40.00. T...

Thanks for all the great replies. So many clever approaches. I think I will combine a couple of the ideas presented here by Bert, Marge, and The1glassman. Go with a 2" black pipe with flang base against the shelf to keep the pipe sturdy while firing. Use a piece of thin fire with a hole cut in ...

Slumping over Fiberboard (Duraboard HD) floral former

For some time I had been looking for a taller floral former as the stainless steel ones that are sold are typically only 4/12" to 7 " tall and I want to slump some vases that are taller for taller cut flowers (Glads, Roses, Iris). Well I bought a 24" x 48" sheet of 2" thick ...

Barb and Cindy, Thank you very much for your replies. They were very helpful. While a slight texture on the back of the iniitial pieces I am going to fuse really would not be a problem for this project. Future projects might require a more smooth surface so I planned on rigidizing the board to give ...
