Hi Ross, Fire polishing goes to the same temperature as tack fusing. I fire at 300F/hr to 1325F. I wait for the ground edges to start looking watery. When the grinder marks are gone (~20minutes) then I advance the controller to the annealing segment. The cooling rate I program in to get to the annea...

Hi Joan, The short answer is ... it depends. The rate of slumping depends on the width of the unsupported glass (wide areas slump before narrow areas), the temperature (hotter temp makes for faster slumping), and time (the longer you hold the piece at one temperature the more it slumps). One way to ...

Hi Carol, Most glass kilns are about 11" deep. So when you take the height of the mold, and the thickness of the posts/shelf into account there is as little as 4 or 5". If your top elements are close together and evenly spaced then there should be even heat distribution across the glass sh...

Hi Bert, Like you, I would have assumed that CLR would remove the white deposit. I also would have assumed that the deposit was either reprecipitation of calcium from the marble, or scale from hard water. The least likely possibility is something being dissolved from the river rocks she has added. A...

Al2O3 works fine for me but I just use it for getting as matte finmish prior to slumping. I haven't taken anything back up to full fuse. Cheers Bob I have been blasting for that matte finish too using silicon carbide. I was told that I had to clean it like a mad woman, scrubby, scrubby, rinse, rins...

Re: Thanks, Bob, re reversing bowl

Hi Bob in Canada. It must be cold there, it's been a terrible winter here in upstate NY. I wondered it I should do 2 slumps. But I worried about devit- it's already been fired 2x and devit seems to start to get excited after 3 firings. Not sure What I'll do- maybe a super slow single slump. Thanks ...

Bob, I got my first two 50 lb "boxes" of grit from Glastar. They cost about $100 each. I just ordered 50 lbs of aluminum oxide from McMaster Carr for about $50.00. If the Aluminum works better than the silicon, I'll have 100lbs of silicone carbide for sale......... Steve Hi again Steve, S...

Hi Leslie, I guess it would work all in one slump but I wonder if the slight stretching that occurred duringh the initial slmp might cause an edge to develop a ripple or crease. If the piece was a real keeper then I would go a conservative route and place the bowl on a kiln shelf and slump it back t...

Speaking of sandblasters--how much does a sandblaster setup cost--nothing fancy, just one capable of getting kiln wash off the back of things or maybe creating a matte finish? I know there are probably a lot of variables as far as cost is concered, but are we talking like $200 range or $800 range o...

Steve, I noticed you said you had three "boxes" of grit. I was wondering if you were getting your grit through a specialty shop such a s a lapidary store ( that is where I got abrasives in small boxes for a vibralap ). I buy my abrasive for sandblasting through a sandblast supply store I f...

Hey Ron, Another lovely project. are the curved sides fused to the base , or are they slumped and then "cold-laminated" to the base? Lovely subtle colours. I didn't see carousels.... I saw a Tibetan tent... or perhaps an upscale igloo... it hit -30C here on the weekend. You guys are worrie...
