Re: quality glass cutter
Thanks to all who posted. I have only cut bullseye glass so far. Some pieces score great and others come out like I used a jackhammer. The texture on each piece is a little different. Now I have a decision to make. I have been a cabinetmaker for over 30 years so I think in terms of a bandsaw when i...

Re: firing schedule question
The book also has firing schedules for various frit applications as well as a thick slab BE firing schedule chart that I've not seen elsewhere. Jerry, Bullseye has that thick slab chart, as well as a huge cache of other tip sheets, tech notes, etc. on their site. http://www.bullseyeglass.com/method...

Re: firing schedule question
using Elmers glue with frit in a drawing Richard LaLonde's book, Fused Glass Art and Technique , contains a huge amount of information about firing with frit. His process of using frit and CMC gel (his formula is in the book) is very close if not precisely what you describe wanting to achieve. The ...

Re: Sandblasting Question
Actually, they are test pieces. One of them I thought was a lost cause that had been sitting in my studio for a couple years. Finally invested in my own sandblaster 6 months ago and thought I'd try to salvage it...I may just go with the matte finish on the bottom. It does look nice! Thanks. If just...

Re: Sandblasting Question
I have just sandblasted two pieces that have pattern bar inclusions, but the basic design is mostly clear glass. The pattern bars picked up kiln wash and needed to be blasted off, so I just sandblasted the entire bottom of the pieces. After some cold work, I fired again to fire polish (around 1300)...

Re: large piece glass cracking issue
Thanks for the help. I thought the bullseye glass was both 96coe and compatible, learning curve :) I have only used the spectrum glass pebbles and have not had a problem. I do think the shape was a major contributor. I have attached a pic of a different piece that I did and also slumped it and no p...

Wissmach Irid
I've been using Wissmach 90 for the last year or so and perhaps have an insight others might find of interest. Or this might just be a 'well duh!' comment. The published information about their irids is that irid initially fired down is brilliant color, fired up is reduced color, and capped disappea...

Re: Using spectrum cullet for pate de verre
Thanks Brad. I know that I will be getting a little iron in the frit when I crush it but I read where a 10% solution of sulfuric acid will clean it out. I have easier access to hydrochloric acid and I was wondering if it would work as well as the sulfuric? I'm as cheap as they come and want to recy...

T-Fal Forms
I just found a T-Fal coated cooking utensil that would make a great slumping mold if safe. I read a generalized MSDS on T-Fal which did not address what happens in temperatures greater than 350F. While sandblasting the item is probably what I'll do to remove the coating, I do wonder about the conseq...

Re: painting on glass
I happened to see this video the other day. It's rather fun but for you, Joan, most importantly focuses on a paint product https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZNUTjSnIoU . This is the AAEGlass website listing for the paints http://www.aaeglass.com/show/category/Original/131 . They also have a pen for a...

Re: knocking off needles on the cheap
Your main problem is glass "volume", full fuse- single layer and probably your unposted schedule. Get a book, take some courses. Brad's Contemporary Fused Glass http://www.warmglass.com/cfg/ is IMHO the best starter/info/reference book on the market. I fire single layer pieces all the tim...

Re: discovered the alrm feature...pushed stop
For my controllers if the firing is interrupted during the heat cycle, I restart the program which restarts at the current temperature; if the firing is interrupted during the cooling cycle, the controller must be reset to the stage you desire.

Re: Advice on buying a new 120V kiln :(
4" muffin fan screwed to the bottom of the control box and blowing up through the louvers keeps things cool. http://www.weirdstuffwemake.com/blackhole/images/kiln_controller_8922.JPG It is ludicrous that this type of measure needs to be taken! Are these kiln manufacturers located in Detroit? T...

Re: Advice on buying a new 120V kiln :(
My Olympic Traveler (POS) may have this relay problem and I'm about to do a high-temp fire in my Olympic 3014GFE and I'm thinking of how to avoid a heat-damaged relay (an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure). The issue appears to be ambient temperature and not heat generated internally ...

Re: Advice on buying a new 120V kiln :(
quote from PAragon website Your relay has been damaged by heat. As the temperature rises in the switch box, the relay fails because the electromagnet that closes the contacts inside the relay has weakened. During the summer if the kiln room gets too hot, use a fan to blow air into the switch box lo...

Re: fastest - but safe - annealing for float 2 layers
Throughout this discussion on "how fast is safe" there has been no mention of stress testing at the end of the process. That will tell you if the annealing was sufficient. If there is significant stress, slow the annealing down. Stephen: I did suggest testing.....................Really, r...

Re: fastest - but safe - annealing for float 2 layers
Hi, Could you please recommend the fastest (while still safe) annealing schedule for 2 layers of float trying to make 2 firings in one day, in the same kiln. Thinking that if I can get a fast annealing - without risking the pieces - the kiln will cool faster and I can do my second firing in the aft...

Re: fastest - but safe - annealing for float 2 layers
I don't think in this type of kiln stacking shelves would be workable. The manufacturer's website gives the following limitation: ' It should be noted that the GTS 2541 is designed to fire a single layer or shelf. The nature of the GTS 2541 is to provide heat from the lid elements directly to the s...
