Agreed, Marty. We use 0000 steel wool to romove the old wash and start over. The finer steel wool won't gouge the metal. - Barbara

Excellent post, Marty. The one thing I might add is that I understand a kiln has a temperature limit. The kiln may keep firing, but it shouldn't exceed the temperature limit for its elements. Correct? I woke up at 4am realizing I had left the manual enameling kiln on. In pajamas, I drove to the shop...

Just an addendum to the tax thing. Many years back, we had a sole prop. co. and ended up paying $2000/yr just for FICA. We hadn't made enough money to pay Income Tax, but the self-employment thing almost killed us. We changed to an S Corp and took our income as "salaries for officers". Mak...

I was really happy about the violet. Unfortunately, I am in a project where I need it NOW. so the customer will simply have to do without that color. But is was sorely needed for the BE palette. Thanks Lani & crew! - Barbara

The problem with plaster is that it shrinks. Replacing a bent panel lamp piece means only needing that mold for probably 1-2 firings. We don't need a permanent mold, but that's what the refractory is. And, my moist pack is bumpy too. It's just a lot of trouble. A lightweight casting material, good f...

We had to buy special table coverings that were fire/flame retardant to comply with the fire code regulations for the shows we were in. Are those covers fire-coded? - Barbara

We use a castable refractory. It's normally used for boiler repairs. Mixes up like cement. Drys hard and smooth, requires no kiln was, but weighs a ton. It doesn't shrink, which is most important. I would really love to find another material, however. Something lighter, easier to work with, but does...

Marty, you are not a "crafter". You know you have progressed well beyond that level. However, you are "expert" at your "craft", so there is definition here. Regardless, as summoned to perform at a "craft show" as a "crafter" definitely means the prom...

Like the other posters, I fuse lots of glasses. 90 COE has only been represented by Bullseye and Wasser, so far. If you want to experiment, great! When I started fusing, there wasn't much info on the subject; so, if it was glass, I fused it. I put several things together that aren't supposed to mesh...

Al, I can't answer your rigidizer question, other than why bother with it. We use bunches of fiber board here, mostly low density; and we don't rigidize. (I believe the duraboard is harder than the LD.) You didn't mention if you were looking for a smooth surface and wanted to rigidize in order to ki...

Then again...they MAY get it. Many students don't understand the differences between copying and emulating. Our job as mentors, instructors, or whatever, is to educate. If someone blatently ignores the ethics for the perceived financial gain, then clean their clocks. I figure that's a "No-holds...

Re: Spectrum

Barbara, As to the value of your post, I think it's always worth listening to what other people have to say. That was the entire prompt for me to put up the question in the first place. If I pay enough attention, I can learn a great deal from what others on this board have to say, and that includes...

Interesting thread. And I don't intend to flame anyone, Spectrum included. Like Cynthia, I have been caught in the middle of production lines, where the samples boards were spread clear across the country and, ALL OF A SUDDEN, the formula changed and I could no longer produce what I SAID I could. I, too, use the greenware pieces purchased in ceramic shops and have them fired to bisque, after I have cleaned it or reshaped it to use as a mold. My thinking is that the piece was made to be "altered" for use...ie: duplicated, decorated, reshaped, whatever, and the copyright is probably ...
