Re: Stupid question: kiln wash

When your build up of kilnwash gets to a certain point, it begins to flake and chip. This is why I recommend not renewing it every time when you are using paper over it. Fusing directly on kilnwash is another thing all together. It doesn't take a dense overcoat to avoid the white scum thing. I make...

Re: Wire Melt/Kiln Wash Failure

Mark, I learned that fiber paper is the way to go the same way you did. However I needed dams anyway. This event motivated me to drive all the way down to the ceramic supply store. Now I have several shelves and lots of nice long flat dams. Aside from the fiber paper instead of wash, you may want to...

Re: TO FUSE OR NOT TO FUSE, that is the question...

I think your lines would move more if you fire face down. Whatever is flat against the shelf will keep its shape, but anything on top that is not flat on the shelf will move until it is (given enough time+heat). Glass on top moves first, which is why face down firing works. That said, I'd want to ke...

Angle the cuts so there is slight overlap. Kind of like a side ways miter cut if that makes any sense.

Do these cut down for smaller sizes well? What do you cut them with?

Re: which bullseye opals stripe when fired on edge?

I tested the heat work theory a bit. I had a bunch of grey and blue strip pieces in my scrap bins so those are what I've tested. All four grey colors give a blueish to teal stripe of varies intensity. The color is most noticeable, of course, when the same shade is next to itself. However any grey ne...

Re: Stupid question: kiln wash

Thank you, Rosanna. How often should I renew it? This was not a stupid question, I wondered the same thing. My first few dozen firings I used thin fire every time with kiln wash as a safety backup to protect the shelf. After awhile the kiln wash started to flake/chip and I decided it was time to sc...

Re: Back Of Plate - Lumpy & Dumpy

Hey, Brad--might wanna check your computer's clock--I read Rachel's post, then her response to your post ABOVE your post, then responded and it's above yours, too. So's this one. ;-) According to it, your post won't occur for another hour or so. I saw that on another thread and thought I was just r...

Re: Blew a fuse?

Thanks Tony and Oritt, On a side note, I opened the kiln this morning and everything survived. It looks like it made it up to process temp and held. No thermal shock. So I will get to cut them up and see what happens in the middle, my favorite part. Off to buy a working voltmeter. Everyone else in m...

Blew a fuse?

I think. Paragon 16 clam. Sentry express 3 key 4.0. It is about five months old. First kiln. In pretty constant use. Checked kiln and temp was right where I expected it to be, went back an hour later (should have been at process temp,1525) and the display is off. Checked the fuse box and it did not ...

Re: More about melts

Have you seen this site? It has several pot melts with before and after photos so you can get some idea of what they put in the pot. http://www.glassblower.info/pot-melt-pot-drop/warm-glass-hot-glass-unique-glass.html I've only done a few melts thus far. I've mixed transparents and opaques with good...

Re: documentation/record keeping

This might seem primitive, but I hand write my notes in a thick exercise book and store my digital photos on my computer in a folder called "glass photos". I store my digital photos on my iPad and take a picture of my hand written notes as well. It works and I can carry my iPad with me to...

Re: Pens that don't burn off.

Pilot gold and silver pens, gold can turn light blue at higher temps (1450? Maybe). The ones listed on Amazon as "Pilot Gold and Silver Permanent Marker, Extra Fine Point, Set of 2 Markers (41400) by Pilot" I have found them at Wallgreen's (in Texas) among other places, they are fairly com...

Re: which bullseye opals stripe when fired on edge?

I have been playing with designs using those thin strips of color with Bullseye glass. Not a reaction between two glasses, rather a quality of the glass that appears from my tests to be related to heat work. If I had to guess I would say it is individual ingredients in the sheet that do not fully bl...

Re: About reactives - in BE glass

I just got an unexpected dark blue line between on edge gray strips, and it made me think of this thread. Unfortunately they cam from my scrap bin so it will be awhile before I can say which Greys, they were darker ones. Fired to only a tack fuse (1440/1) as I was just throwing scraps in spare space...

Re: How to Create frit casting mold - Help!

I wonder about the hollow bottoms too. Could be to allow more even heating and cooling. Might also just be because they are slip cast. I've never used Amaco #25. Different clay bodies are formulated for specific properties, if you have a local clay supplier nothing beats going in and asking question...

Re: Opaque paint markers

It will scratch off if not fired on, but not all paint markers can hold up to being heated. There are ones made for glass that you 'fire' in your oven at 350 or250?? Never used them. There is a silver that can go up to slump temps, maybe higher but I have not gone higher so can't say for sure. The g...
