Re: Kiln wash application

Thanks guys. I will try brushing it on. I used an HVLP sprayer before and it does work well if you can get the mold out of the kiln. It doesn't put much particulate into the air only steam.

Re: Enamel & powder

I have been using clear glass flux that is waterground and mason ceramic stains to do printing and painting work for many years. It is a little less transparent than straight glass enamels but it gives one a broad palette. I get a large bag of the clear flux which is a fritted glass powder and then ...

Kiln wash application

I usually apply dilute kiln wash by spray onto a hot stainless steel mold and it sticks great. However, I am now firing into a 48" bowl mold and it is just too large to remove when hot and spray with the kiln wash. Does anyone have any ideas of how to get the kiln wash to stick to a cold (room ...

Re: fusing sheets together

Thanks Brad. I now understand what Kevin was saying about staggering multiple sheets to get an even seam. The problem is that staggering multiple sheets will also create more of a bubble problem between the sheets. I was just hoping that someone out there had an idea of how minimal a simple overlap ...

Re: fusing sheets together

Thanks for the response Kevin but I am not sure what it means. I was just wondering if I lay down a sheet of the 5mm and then lay another sheet slightly on one edge of the first one, how much overlap would work best without causing a lot of irregularity in the finished piece.

fusing sheets together

I am looking at fusing two 24"x 48" sheets together of 5mm Oceanside clear. I am considering doing a simple edge overlap fusing but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to how much overlap is the best at this thickness to get a minimum ridge in the glass. Thanks

Re: Flat Lap

You might try applying a ferrous sheet to the aluminum base disc for the magnetic grinding discs to stick to. I found a site for the ferrous sheet material. It is: https://us.first4magnets.com/ferrous-ma ... tapes-t174

Re: Glass not filling void in lost wax technique

The two separate coats of investment are important. You need to do an initial face coat of the wax with a plaster and silica flour mix, let it set and then do a jacket coat with a plaster, silica and grog mix. I have had both face and jacket coat crack some but they don't crack in alignment with eac...

Re: Flat Lap

I have thought about this too. I assume that the RPM of the pottery wheels is slower than that of the flat lap grinders. Does that make a significant difference?

Re: WIFI monitoring of RTC 1000

Thanks Brad. I will look into the webcam idea. I couldn't do an interface (if one had been available) or the webcam before because I didn't have internet service at the shop. I put a wifi bridge up between my house and my studio and now I am streaming capable. Any suggestions for the webcam?

WIFI monitoring of RTC 1000

I just set up a Bartlett RTC 1000 kiln controller for my kilns. It works great but I contacted Bartlett to find out if they had an add on that would allow me to monitor my kiln via WIFI. I don't want to program my kiln wirelessly, I just want to monitor it wirelessly (so I don't need a KISS system)....

Re: Using Glass Flux in Casting Process

Thanks Kevin. I assume that sticking might be a problem with the glass flux but I think that I will give it a try. I am using Spectrum Nuggets for the casting. If the flux doesn't work, I may try the same idea of a splash coat of powdered 96 COE frit. I kind of hope that the glass flux will (besides...

Using Glass Flux in Casting Process

I am casting some pieces that have pretty fine detail and small channels. After I have steamed and burned out all wax residue from the molds, I am considering doing a splash application in the molds of dilute low temp glass flux before I do the pot cast. The idea would be to enhance the flow of the ...

Re: painting crisp, even thickness lines

Don- I like the idea of using the Oracal 13 resist and using a parallel blade cutter but I was wondering how you prefer to apply the paint to the lines. I have used airbrush in the past but it creates a lot of mess. Do you just paint the paints on the lines and does the Oracal eliminate any underfea...

Re: Carbon Steel Mold

With the stainless steel molds that I have, I have had mainly some surface oxidation in the form of rust. On the steel disc blade that I have been using, I have had minimal flake spalling. In both cases applying kiln wash minimizes problems. I was just wondering if there was a coating that I could u...

I usually use stainless steel for my bowl molds but I am considering buying a carbon steel wok to use as a mold. Has anyone used ITC or some other product to limit spalling on carbon steel molds?

Re: casting glass

I just checked with Olympic Color (where I got my nuggets a few years ago) and their price for a 50# bag is $62.50. That is not a huge price increase. The trick is in avoiding the freight charges if possible.

Re: casting glass

I always used Spectrum Studio Nuggets and still have a back supply. Oceanside has evidently started producing nuggets since they are listed at Delphi. They are however more expensive than the Spectrum nuggets that I purchased a few years ago. When I bought nuggets a few years ago, they cost about a ...
