Re: air supply for blasting hood?

Bonnie, What you are looking for is a positive air flow respirator. I found several on Amazon, but remember that the ones with full face mask also have the problem of the clear area being pitted by the blasting and will require expensive replacement. All of the ones that I found did not come with an...

Re: SSR question

Thanks Bert. Are your relays mounted away from the kiln? I plan on isolating them from the kiln so the ambient temp will not be more than room temp along with using heat sinks. The other question that I have is about the goo. Isn't the goo for ssr's designed to transmit temperature rather than insul...

Mica in Casting Mold

Has anyone out there tried putting a thin coating of mica on the surfaces of a casting mold for a pot casting? Mainly I am curious as to whether the mica will move with the flowing glass or will it form a fairly uniform outer coating.

Re: enamel suggestions

I have done work very similar to wet on wet watercolor by sandblasting the glass first for tooth. Then load the sandblasted glass with water and start to paint on the enamels. The flow that I got was very similar to watercolor washes.

Re: SSR question

Thanks Bert. I am going with a single zone because I tested the different outer zones with a temp gun and have found them not to vary much from each other or the center. I built the kiln with a very even separation of elements in the ceiling and heavy insulation. It seems to be pretty consistent. Th...

Re: kiln controller question

Thanks Bert, I think that I am going to wire a single female to the controller and switch out thermocouple lines when I need to. I am going to use a low voltage toggles to switch signal voltage lines but I would be worried about doing the same thing with the thermocouple lines where current accuracy...

Re: SSR question

Thanks for the information. I was probably going on outdated information on the failure potential of ssr's. I had a friend have a relay in his controller fail many years ago. The kiln was white hot by the time he checked it. It kind of spooked me.

Re: kiln controller question

I have already gotten the type K connectors and type K extension wire. I am going to have a single length from the thermocouple to the controller. I am going to run some tests on a 25' run to make sure that the thermocouple is reading the same as with a much smaller run (5').

Re: SSR question

Thanks for the information on the ssr's. I was already planning on using good heatsinks with the ssr's and setting them away from the kilns to minimize ambient temperature. What I was thinking about doing to minimize the failure of the ssr was to use separate ssr's on each of the hot legs of the 240...

Re: SSR question

I just asked because I have 40 amp relays already. I will look for 50 amp relays and see what I can find. I have always considered redundant relays (relays on both lines) to be the way that I would want to wire a kiln, in case one of the relays crapped out in a closed circuit position. I am wiring t...

SSR question

I built a bell kiln with 4 elements (240v). Each element has a load of approximately 9 amps. I ran wire to the kiln that took into consideration the standard safety margin for amp capacity. In other words, the wire handles 50 amps and the kiln actually has a load of 36 amps. The question that I have...

Re: kiln controller question

Thanks everyone. I think that it is time to do some simple testing to see if the longer wires to the thermocouple maintain the same temp readings as the shorter wires.

Re: kiln controller question

Thanks again Brad. I was more concerned about the length of the wire leading to the thermocouple than the actual length of the thermocouple. The article that you sent me seems to suggest that the length of the wire shouldn't be much of a problem if it is less than 150' or so. I am thinking about cen...

Re: kiln controller question

Thanks Brad. Do you have any idea of how long a thermocouple lead can be before you lose accuracy on the temperature?

kiln controller question

I have two kilns which I seldom use at the same time. I would like to build ssr boxes on the wall by each kiln and then use a portable controller made with an RTC-1000 (containing low voltage receptacles and plugs for signal voltage, thermocouple and a separate power source). Does anyone have any ex...

Re: irritating news

I am glad that you are back in the glass Bert. I don't have any hip problems but I have started using a lot more winches and good old Egyptian engineering to get things into the kiln. As far as the Ferro thing, it seems like everything is going south. I too have back engineered some of my mediums to...

Re: Pottery Kiln Wash?

I use 60% alumina hydrate and 40% calcined kaolin. I think that the calcined kaolin is a little looser than the EPK.
