I don't have much experience with those vases. Others here can tell you more about that. I would say exploit that taco until you get the results your want. Don't "dis" float glass. There are float -compatible frits, enamels in many colors. Low-fire (cone 06) ceramic glazes can yeild some v...

Welcome Skin_Mechanic I'm by no stretch of the imagination an expert. I want to break the ice and welcome you to the WGB. How have your experiments turned out? I looked at the your kiln through the link at the top of this page. Is it about 18" deep? Good. Several peep holes-Good especially for ...

Thanks Bert and Phil, That is the kind of feedback I was looking for. Maybe I benefitted from beginers luck on my first sink. I am well aware of all the pitfalls and the labor, patience, production costs of making a sink, but I just wanted to know if my $1200 ballpark is truley in the ballpark. I gu...

Watershed, I don't undestand. Are you talking to the potential buyer who thinks $1200 is too much for a sink? Or are you saying that I shouldn't be asking $1200 right off the bat? I don't get it. Are you responding to the person who wants to buy a kiln so she can make a sink or are you talking to me...

How long should it take to sandblast the drain hole? My blasting set-up is quite limiting and I know it would take hours.
(I'm aware of the recent discussions on blasting equipment, but I haven't been able to up-grade yet.)

I'll talk to you about the sink business. I've had a lot of inquiries about sinks (bath basins) but only one commission. Didn't make a lot of money on this one but it did pay me to learn. I got $550 for this one but I've been ballbarking $1200.00. I based my ballpark price on other sinks I've seen A...

I think I hear Dee saying the glass is colorfull all by itself that maybe the backgrounds and graphics could be more subdued. Your crucible poured plates and rondels are quite interesting as are the doilie stencils. I wanted to click on some of your work to get a larger view but couldn't. All in all...

Mark,

How deep do you go and with what abrasive?
psi?
cfm?

Looks like I'll be doing an experiment.

Mark,

Do you use it for acid etching or for sandblasting? I think the film is tough enough to resist the blasting but I wonder if it adheres tight enough to resist the "wind".

All of the above plus:
She has to drill the drain hole and maybe cut the rim off if she doesn't want a wide, flat rim, and if she cuts off the rim then she has to grind and polish (or fire-polish) the rim. Sinks are not easy.

Has anyone ever heard of a latex mask used in sign painting called "Spraylat" You roll or brush on a good couple of coats and let it dry(it is a water-base and it evaporates turning from milky to clear-ish blue). Then you cut with an Exacto, strip away what you want to paint (or fill with ...

At just the right fusing temp (I don't have notes in front of me) and by not firing hotter than necessary, I get 2 or 3 firings on a sheet of 1/16 inch fiber paper. You can get a few more if you sift a dry diatamaceous earth/plaster mix evenly on the paper before firing. By pressing the glass slight...

A couple of people ask me repeatedly for something, anything, in royal purple. I keep telling them repeatedly purple is hard to find. Now I'll tell them about this discussion, I'm sure they think I'm not looking very hard (or lying!)

I get many questions as to whether my trays are tempered. Also inquiries about making shower enclosures using kiln-fired glass. Will do some shopping.

I was told by a glass manufacturer (don't remember who but I found them in the Thomas Register) that my fired and textured glass can't be tempered because the glass has different thicknesses due to the nature of kiln-fired glass. Also that it had to be flat. Bert, you say your roller furnace opens 1...

I just talked to a guy who makes stone monuments. He told me about something called "Banding Sand" and he says it's a very sharp, efficient abrasive. Cheap, too. I was talking to him about sandblasting a photographic image and he says I should use this "banding sand". It's 0000 (...

I think the proper pressure depends on the end result you're trying to achieve. If I want to surface etch I don't need much "pressure". I use about 100 psi but I'm only putting out about 12 cfm (cubic feet per minute.) The heavy duty sandblasting that requires deep and even blasting throug...
