Surface questions

OK, I need some help. This is one of those times when an experiment of my own would be the best, but running short on time, so if someone else knows . . . During the second firing of my recent work I fire face down (on thinfire) - I like the crisp edges and the entire look face-down gives me much be...

Just picked up a copy of American Craft at the bookstore in town. Ummm Lani--any insterest in adopting a 38 year old woman? (Keep in mind I come with a husband, four cats, two dogs and a rabbit). The house is gorgeous! and the glass...well you must wake up happy every day (and I bet there are no to...

Sheesh! I can't believe that I didn't mention that Judith wrote the above mentioned article! (as well as one on patternbars and another on slumping bowls) And Brad has one in there on drop rings. Sorry - didn't mean to ignore anyone.

More Famous-ness going on around here

Just got my issue of Glass Craftsman, and want to point out the fantastic article featuring Bob and Catharine. Have a look. And as a side note, I just have to comment Catharine - I've said this to several others about you, and now that I'm thinking of it I'll tell you. Woman, you are like trying to ...

Maybe you can pre-fuse some slabs of multi colored high-fire glass, cut them up and add pieces into your work. As for the pulling in around the fiber paper problem, you may need to coldwork after the first firing and then firepolish.

Thanks for the nice feedback - always a good gang around here for that. :) Jim: Funny that you mention the blue piece. I'm not much of a blue lover - (well, I love the deep cobalt) but due to a mix up I have oodles of Egyptian Blue and figured I'd use some up. Really though I'm not as thrilled with ...

Geri Comstock, Glass Artist

*yes, the glass is melted together in a hot kiln
*yes, it's for sale
*No, it won't bounce if dropped!

Don't forget, *No, you may not lick it!

Remember Geri's famous lick test ?! Too funny!

I would try soaking at a lower temp. Maybe 1175 or 1200. You've probably already trapped the air by the time you do your saok. If that doesn't do it, do a couple of soaks, one at 1125 or 1150, then crawl up 25 or 50 more degrees and soak again.

After reading all the above, all I can say is thank-the-goddess I have a boy and he's only 10 years old! You've gotta be kidding Marty! Boys want all that stuff as much, if not more, than girls. StepBoy wasn't much older than that (13) when I agreed to bleach his hair streaky blonde while he was he...

This is good stuff, keep em coming. I cold work just about every piece I build. Grinding, reshaping, and polishing. I can remove the big industrial look this way. Thinking of screw type, threaded gold ball. The glass would be bezel set and fixed, or dangle. The problem I foresee, these little tiny ...

Some are quite redundant, and others I've shown before, but once uploaded to my picture site I can't figure out how to delete the extras. Just change the slideshow setting to faster . . .

I have been lurking for a while. I used to make holes with fiber paper. but I wanted something thinner. I got rods from the glass supply store and coated them with bead release. Fortunately, I tested them. They either broke the glass or remained stuck. I coated the rods a few days ago, but they wer...

To consign or not to consign

I really don't understand why everone is so willing to accept the notion that galleries will only do consignment. Granted, I haven't dealt with that many, but every one I have dealt with is more than willing to purchase outright - I tell them that is my "policy." I will be happy to allow t...

Don't paint them Cindy. It could scratch off and look awful. But, if you want, have them powder coated - comes in tons of colors. We're going to the powder coater any minute - call me or run over if you need info.

Well, I'm not nearly as proficient with my wbs as Brock, not by a long shot, but grinding little-bitty pieces like that on the wbs seems like a scary proposition to me. Watch your pinkies.

How small are your pieces Paul? A new 70 grit belt on your wet belt sander will eat more than glass if you're not careful - - watch your fingers if the pieces are really small.

Oh, and another thing to consider - I just re-read your post and realized that the base glass was BE and all the elements are Uroboros. That could very easily be your problem. I use some Uro mixed in occasionally and although I've never personally had a problem, I know others have once in a while. Y...

Since you happened to mention "baffling" I'll suggest thats just what you do if you try to repair this again. Here's what I think the problem could be - You say the piece has been fired 4 times, which makes it a little touchy to begin with, but shouldn't really be a problem. Its been break...
