Cindy, I'm so proud of you and so very happy for you! Your tower turned out fantastic - I can't believe I didn't see it done before you brought it in. #-o You really should post a picture of the vanilla one also - it is beautiful, just fantastic. We should plan an AZ group to go to artwalk that nigh...

I can also see potential from a design standpoint Cynthia. Do I think the pieces are worth the minimum bid amount? No. (Apparently I'm not alone in that thought, as I don't see any bids.) However, I still think there is far more design potential here than in some perfectly executed, albeit horribly ...

Re: time to anneal 18" plate?

I've been holding my 18" plates for about 45 minutes at 960 to anneal. I go AFAP from slump or fuse temp to 1050 and then about 250/hr to 960 hold. Is this enough time? I had someone tell me their large plate broke in two for no apparant reason. Sounds like an annealing problem to me. It's an ...

Hey Jim, nice of you to share your pictures. :) Was that Linda Steider I saw a picture of - or two?! Where has that woman been? And why doesn't she visit us on the board? Just in case a long soak at slumping temps doesn't give you a defined enough look, you may want to actually fuse your blank right on top of the fiberpaper numbers that Barbara suggested. Personally I can never get fiberpaper textures to show enough at slumping temps, so if you have to fuse the blank...

Like many fusers, I systematically use the irrid on the bottoms of all bowls to avoid kilnwash sticking.... Ron, have you standblasted a design onto the bottom of a bowl and then fused.... the design still stays there, I would presume? Might be a subtle little trick to try..... 8) Avery does this a...

I thought if I tucked it between the kiln posts and the shelf it would not curl up on me. Has anyone tried this? Or is there a reason for not using shelf that I am not aware of? This sounds like you plan on using thinfire (curl up) and I don't think that will work. It isn't meant to withstand 1700 d...

Do you make the interior glass smaller than the ring or basically the same diameter? Bert, this tip won't be of much use to you with float because I don't think it smooths over as well, but with BE I've taken a bunch of scrap sized pieces and cast them in the rings. If you're not casting, just cut ...

Have you seen us make mention of the stainless rings? This is the exact application for which they are intended. Look in the classified section to order some.

I'm sure that's not grout. That roll-up (which I know very little about but would love to know more one day) is made from a panel composed of murini slices and the "white line" you see is the outter color of each murini slice. Picture a pattern bar pulled into a long narrow piece then slic...

You didn't do anything wrong. In fact, I take pattern bars up to 1500, so it's not because you went too hot - it's just the nature of the beast. One thing that will help is cutting your fiberpaper dams a little shorter. The glass hangs up on it forming the little spikes. That said, we all get them t...

Lani, Great work. Interesting project. It's always fun to see the different ways people interpret a theme. I would love to have the chance to work with a metal fabricator like that. Jim brings up a point that has been raised in the past, but I don't know that we ever have, or could, come up with a solution . Unless you are taking a private one-on-one class, someone is going to be done first, and someone is going to be done last. There is obviously nothing wrong with being eithe...

Try thinking of components you can make in your small kiln. For example, make up 16 interesting small pieces with an outter stand and drill holes to connect them with wire in a 4/row by 4/ row square. Suddenly you're not so limited at all - you can make pieces as big as you'd like. Thats just an exa...

I put thinfire on top of 1/8" fibre. Fired to 1510, 15 min hold. I have very fine dust like particles stuck to the back (thinfire side). Without sanblasting can anyone advise a way to get this clean? Also, is there a limit to temp that thinfire should go to?..............steve Hi Steve, I use ...
