Re: Flash glass questions

I do stained glass and frequently use fused layers to afford the multiple color capability of flashed glass. I don’t full fuse the way the ‘kiln press ‘ folks do. I tack fuse the layers to better retain the shape of the individual piece. It works well. It doesn’t ultimately save me any money because...

Re: Buying Bullseye Glass

Yeah, Kevin i get it. I live pretty close to a number of glass manufacturers, but my taste is for stuff made either in Portland or European stuff sold in New Jersey. Maybe I should adapt to my environment. Humans are supposed to be able to do that

Buying Bullseye Glass

Hi. I'm in Cincinnati, OH. I'm using more and more Bullseye. I was purchasing it at Brazee Street studios. They are a fairly well stocked BE distributor. I was buying small cutoff sheets as I need them, and I was happy to pay retail for the convenience, and because I wouldn't have to buy much more t...

Re: Removing sticker 'ghost marks'

Surprising. The gawd damned stuff should have submitted to the mf-ing acetone. Jim recommended petroleum based solvents, that's a good idea but most residues that dissolve in mineral spirits will also dissolve in acetone. Acetone or lacquer thinner work on all the tapes and stickers I encounter. Try...

The depth and surface interest are engaging. I'd like to see them backlit with natural light too....bet they have some opal fire to them

Re: glass I'm working on

Here's a piece I finished last month. It has pink striker petals fused onto the substrate, and glass paint for the rest of the imagery. The dark area at the bottom depicts Horsetooth Mountain ridge in Fort Collins.

Re: Is an art degree necessary for you to be or become an "artist"?

They're looking for a specific type of artist at a certain point in what is supposed to be an art career (heh). There are other prereq's for this exhibition besides the one you mentioned. I don't think anyone, including the Renwick Alliance would declare that their prereqs are necessary for one to b...

Re: HOMEMADE IRIDIZING?

Years ago I bought some stannous chloride, thinking I could iridize glass in the kiln. Fortunately a chemical engineer friend warned me that I'd be building a bomb in my kiln so I didn't try it. I just now googled 'glassblowing & stannous chloride' and lots of info came up. I understand it's us...

All the drawing programs that I’ve encountered had offered free trials. Turbocad does too

Re: Computer program for strip cut

Turbocad. It has quite a few different snaps and array copies that makes experimenting with strips fun. It's inexpensive. Like any vector drawing tool, it has a learning curve.

Re: proper crimping tool

The single purpose tools are awfully expensive. I just bought some butt splice terminals from these guys, and they sell the fancy tools. I'll use my el cheapo electrical stripper pliers to crimp them

Re: Relief casting mold

I've always used plasticine for making relief molds. I don't feel real skillful with it. I've done three or four stained glass windows with relief pieces that made that way. I remember rolling it out spending time tooling it a bit, then using a heat gun to smooth the surface, using those little syri...

Re: Relief casting mold

Thank you for the suggestions. I think all of them would work. I'm leaning toward getting some 1/4" thinfire from our local Bullseye retailer, if they've got it. I see it for sale in the Bullseye catalog. There's quite a bit of discussion in the archives here about making wafers. I'm looking th...

Re: Relief casting mold

I didn't see the missing 'r' until Edpal247 pointed it out, even after a spell check on the browser, in which I may have spelled it correctly, but maybe not, because the results would correct it for me. Maybe I've never known about that 'r'. I'm not surprised or too concerned, but maybe I should get...

Here's an example from ...my god!, sixteen years ago! It's a pain in the neck and I don't need to worry about the texture of the surface, I can paint the textures I want.

Relief casting mold

I will be doing some frit casting for a largish stained glass piece. It will be tree limbs. Lots of limbs. I have done this before by making a clay positive: Roll out the clay into a thin tile, cut out the tree limbs, cast the thing in plaster/silica, then use the plaster mold for frit casting. One ...

Re: glass I'm working on

Thank you for the compliments. The paint in the border pieces are a R&G transparent, I forget which number. The white glass in the border is float, blasted all over the back after all firing is complete. It does pop out pretty well, but we regret not going the extra step and using colorless anti...
