Re: Plastic Blowing Art Form , Plastics acting like glass

We have a plastics supply store in our area. They sell all sorts of plastics and I would start there. So look up plastic retailers to get a start or look for their websites. There are many companies that form plastics for different purposes so if you keep calling places that sell plastics, you shoul...

Re: structural ?

I would have to see some sort of drawing to see what you mean exactly. Could you do a drawing and take a photo of it and post the photo so we could better understand the problem?

Re: Flat bed grinder

A large surface area filter should do the trick or at least reduce the number of times you need to clean it. You need to catch pretty small particles so you will need small holes so you will need a larger filter so you don't slow the amount of water pumping. There are some foam filters they use for ...

You might also trying asking at a glassblowers forum. This is primarily a kiln glass forum. The glassblowers may know more about it.

Re: My flat bed grinder

Yes, that is why I framed it ,'over here'. Anyway, the little pumps for aquariums or for small waterfalls are the same product. They do have different rates of pumping but most will be just fine for a tile saw.

Re: Shock from kiln

Yes, a static shock is a quick snapping type and when I have grabbed a live wire (120 volt) it is a buzz (just did it the other day while fixing a broken light bulb that the person said was off).

Re: My flat bed grinder

Over here, most hardware stores carry little pumps and they work just fine. The pump that came with my tile saw was too tall unless everything was perfect so I bought another pump that was shorter but wider and just switched them.

Re: Fusing bullseye with copper foil

If you don't sandwich the copper between layers of glass it will turn black and burn away. It may be because I always used float glass and the air got to it longer before the glass sealed on the edges.

Re: Fusing bullseye with copper foil

You are lucky. I've never managed to get the copper to turn blue. Maybe I should try foil. What thickness of copper are you using?

Re: Uneven bowl slumping

I'm probably too late to comment but isn't 300dph pretty fast for something that has been trouble? I only use float glass so others will know more but I might slow way down just before the glass starts to move. That would assure you have more even heating? Like I said I only use float glass so I may...

Re: vermiculite boards

I use kiln wash on vermiculite and it is fine but I am using stiff window glass (float glass mostly). The one inch thick boards that fit my kiln (2 foot x 3 foot) warp the first firing and if I flip it, it warps up the first firing on that side. So I don't use it for a large flat shelf. It is great ...

Re: Bead Door on Kiln

From the video on Youtube, it looks like you could easily cut out a piece of 1 inch fiber board (or whatever will work best) a bit bigger than the bead door(s) and then put a brick holding that against the outside of the door to make a complete seal. You just don't want air going through there when ...

Re: Kiln Venting

Window glass is not lead glass and never has been. But fiber paper stinks like burning sugar so vent that. Enamels can have some stuff that needs venting too. You won't have a problem if you prepare your shelves with kiln wash instead of fiber paper and practice with old windows. Old windows are gre...

Re: Glow in the Dark Powder

What are holes that don't go all the way through the glass? Sounds like the glow powder is trapping air or gassing off. Try little shards of compatible glass on the edges to give more time for the air to get out before the edges seal.

Re: fusing hand prints and paints

When you do this, assume there are trace amounts of lead in the glass paint. Wash your hands thoroughly immediately especially with children. Just because something says it is food safe, doesn't mean it has absolutely no lead or cadmium in it. It just means it will pass the lead test after firing.

Buy a new mold and chip out the entire old mold with a pattern so you have a unique texture/pattern on your old mold.

It would be interesting to find out what other people that are picking up the free frit are doing with it. If you want compatible frit, just take a piece of tempered glass clean it well, wrap it in a tarp and snap off a corner with pliers. Voila, your very own compatible frit.

I buy SS and copper foil from Alaskan Copper and Brass in Seattle. When I am in the area, I just grab some of their SS cutoffs. I'm sure I could get it from one of the welders at the Boat yard, too. -Jolly

For simple forms, I keep some sheets of stainless steel (22 ga. or so). It cuts with tin snipes, bends easily and lasts a long time. -Jolly
