Could you, perhaps, slump it slightly in something larger and more shallow and THEN put it in your new mold for a second slump? It seems that if you get it to drop in the middle a little, the sides would pull in and not over hang your new mold so much.
Just a thought.

I guess I have a whole new area to explore....either that, or the results are so dismal as to be not worth comment. Oh well, the fiberglass roving is free, so far, so the only think I'll be wasting is my time!

Fiberglass in firing

Hello, all. I know there has been discussion before about using fiberglass and silica cloth. I did a search, but couldn't find an answer to this question, which I've asked before. I apologize for the redundancy, but I'm hoping someone can steer me in the right direction. Are there rigidizers that yo...

I'm already north of Seattle. I'd like to join in on the tours, but you'd be backtracking to pick me up prior to visiting the "glass places." Could I meet you at Spectrum, Franz and/or Bullseye without the bus trip?

[quote="Bob"]Hi Janz, Yup, it sounds like devitrification. Your observation that the scummy finish is most common on the opal glasses rings true. Opals are particularly prone to devit. Also, the chemistry of glasses made for fusing has been formaulated to minimize devitrification. If the S...

Are there rigidizers that you can use with the fiberglass? I have access to a supply of fiberglass roving. I have some in my garage and am trying to figure out the best way to use it.

I guess the secret's out anyway, might as well spill... I live in Arlington, WA. It's about 60 miles north of Seattle, 4 hours from Portland, and not far at all from the Camano Island metioned earlier in this thread. The summers are beautiful, and the winters are mild, and the real estate is priced ...

Isn't it possible that you'd only have to go that slow up to a certain temp. Then you could increase the ramp rate.
Just a thought.

Re: Old Stock

And, of course, I have an opinion on all this. Some time back Spectrum put in their catalogs that ALL their glass was compatable with all their glass. Now, that doesn't always work out, but it works more times than it doesn't. Devit isn't a problem with any Spectrum. Fuse it up the way you usually ...

You might try slumping over a rumpled up fiber blanket. Also, I've messed around with a product called Prop It. I bought it at a ceramics/pottery supply store. It's very much like a ceramic fiber batting - for lack of a better word.
