At my Pilchuck session A decade ago I think, I did one kiln casting project. After my mold was made we had trouble fitting evrything in the kiln so I sawed some corners off of the mold. Needless to say, I got a puddle of glass out of the kiln. This experience sucked. When I returned home, I was teac...

2 remarkable teachers I have encountered are Albinus Elskus and Paul Marioni. They were inspiring in completely different ways. Albin was very clear in his descriptions of technique. When I read his book, I can totally imagine him presenting the info in it. The techniques that I learned from him wer...

We slump Starphire all the time (except for a few years back when it wasn't available-plant problems?) We always slumped with tin down and used Fusemaster clearcoat never had a problem. We slump into SS and over SS to make lighting fixtures. We always blast the inside of the fixture for that nice w...

Tom The recipe for borax spray is in the old archoives many times. I think it may have been put in FAQ or tutorial. Making your own is cheap and easy. You can get away with spraying before or after doing your frit work. It depends on what you are doing with the frit. If you were covering the entire ...

I have some left over glassblowing powders (krugler) that I have had good and bad results with. I usually go to around 1450 with a very light dusting. Some colors crack like crazy and other colors have blended quite nicely without any 'visible' signs of incompatability- but I don't have one of thos...

Re: Full Fusing Spectrum and testing Float at same time.

I am getting ready to do a full fuse with some spectrum. I just bought some 1/4" float that I want to see if it is going to be compatble with some of my float frit and confetti before I do this other project. Seeing how I will only be going up to 1465 for the Spectrum, will this be high enough...

Thanks Charlie As I use float, I imagine that I must use 1700 . I cant´t wait to try. Need more kilns, so many new options...  Luiza Be aware that float glass does not have the flow properties that Bulleseye glass has. It needs at least 80 degrees more heat to soften than Bullseye and e...

Not Hydrostone, Hydroperm. I've only used it for open face casting. It has specific mixing criteria, which when done correctly leaves the mold full of small bubbles, similar to an Aero chocolate bar. This network of bubbles allows the moisture in the mold to be vented through the mold. No 3 day air...

Re: Q-Bert-Commercial Brackets?

Bert, I want to know if I have this right. If I build my own hardware I need to get a UL listing. However, if I buy commercial ones, I am okay. I am planning on working with a local blacksmith this coming year. Thanks....Claudia  Claudia I am not a code expert. I would ask your local electric...

Mica can be sifted onto the shelf and used as a separator as well. My understanding is that potters use it. I have used it for full fuse on small pieces and it works very well, but it also leaves a mother-of-pearl sheen on the surface of the glass as some of the mica fuses into the glass surface......

Hugo My knowledge is practical not scientific. The alumina that I use is flour of alumina hydrate. The trick is to get the finest ground product that you can get. Since most suppliers only carry one type, you get what they get. I believe that Bullseye seperator is made with alumina hydrate that is v...
