Re: Fused Glass Sinks

Yes, you do have to consider thermal shock.

You may want to contact Lisa Vogt and ask for her comments. She's the fused glass sink Queen (well, OK, she teaches classes, has videos, and has done a lot of sinks).

Re: Disposing of ground glass

I have a Gleco trap on my utility sink. I wash anything glass related in that sink (glass itself, brushes, etc). If the piece is small enough, I'll coldwork with handpads in that sink. The grinder sludge, I scrape out and dispose of. Other coldworking water usually ends up in the yard (the water buc...

Re: precious metal clay

If you want basically a glass surface "painted" with silver, I would look at using clay slip. Keep in mind certain glass colors will react with the silver (and the silver can contaminate your shelf). Otherwise, your best bet is to create a bezel with the embellishments overlaying the glass...

50/50 mixture of pottery plaster and silica. Both can be purchased cheaply from any pottery supply.

Re: Slumping question

Try it. Slump it very conservatively (low and slow, as they say). Watch it when it starts moving and you can always stop the slump and skip to anneal if things go awry. My guess is the glass will bend at about 1100 deg F. I would think 5" is plenty wide enough to keep it stable, but you definit...

Re: glass chips to prevent bubbles

I don't quite understand if the frit ends up on the surface uncapped or is sandwiched between the glass, but at any rate, keep in mind that you may see the clear glass chips in the final result. If the idea is to back a frit painting on clear with a white piece of glass, I would suggest next time fu...

Re: Should I switch to System 96?

While I guess you could say "the future of 96 is uncertain", it is still widely available. There isn't any rush at the moment to begin switching out studio inventory. I love the BE folks, too, but I work with System 96 because it traditionally was more readily available, and I don't want t...

Re: Can I slump directly on a kiln shelf without a mold?

I have slumped platters where the two short edges are placed on fiber-paper covered kiln dams, and then allow the glass to slump to the kiln-washed or fiber-blanketed shelf.

Re: Attaching Glass Panel to Aluminum

There is enough float with the silicone that the rivets are not a problem. Or, as Marty says, you can grind them flat.

Re: Attaching Glass Panel to Aluminum

In the image below, there is no "backing board". The glass is siliconed directly to the aluminum, and one side of the aluminum is painted for a nice finish prior to adhering the glass. One or more D-rings riveted to the aluminum. You can use one D-ring and hang the work using it, or if you...

Really nice. I love how the texture on the outside complements the darker texture inside (as seen in the last picture). You've mixed a lot of different patterns, but pulled it off well.

Re: Irid Plate

A couple of solutions I can think of: * Put a piece of Papyrus/ThinFire in the areas where you want less texture. * Use the smoother side of the fiber paper for the area you want smooth, and flip the fiber paper to the rougher side for the area where you want texture. I would go with the second opti...

Re: Spectrum System 96

I don't think there is really a "top" side. There is a smooth side and a side that is a bit textured. Depending upon what you are doing dictates which side is facing up. For instance, when layering glass pieces, I will try to put texture facing texture, or at least texture facing smooth to...

Creating an on-line presence

I have a new blog post that might be useful for anyone who is trying to decide on an option for establishing an on-line presence for your work (on-line market, blog, custom web site, etc).
