Re: PID temperature controllers
I'm no good to you, last time I tried to use one of those "Plug & Play" controllers I never could get it to work. If Tony Smith comes by the board he might be able to help, or you could try Brad Shute at handmade-glass.com

Re: gasket material
You could patch that with kiln cement/brick mortar.
Alternatively, you could replace the entire brick, but the mortar would be easier.
Add a layer of fiber paper on top would probably not help that much anyway.

Re: gasket material
Why are you dropping the lid when you close it? You shouldn't really need any kind of cushioning if you're just closing the lid gently. Is there a reason why you need to drop it?

Re: glasses for kiln work
You need glasses that block infrared radiation. That's welder's glass, shade 2 to 3, you're probably wearing something much darker than that. Medical supply houses also sell glasses that block infrared, as well as most fused glass suppliers and distributors. You don't know didymium glasses (lampwork...

Re: Multiple high temperature firings
It does.
I'd be leery of firing more than once (and twice at the most) at temperatures above 1600F/870C. Incompatibility can result. It's especially likely with whites, with glasses containing aventurine, with glasses containing gold, and with pieces you absolutely don't want it to happen.

Re: Sunshine mixing flux
MIxing flux is clear, not white. It has two main purposes. You can add it to any color to get that color to shine up at a lower temperature. For example, the greens often are a little dull at 1350F, but adding a little mixing flux will get them to shine up at that lower temperature. Secondarily, the...

Re: What can I do to save this piece?
I guess it depends on what you'd like to accomplish with the piece. Generally, flipping and re-firing helps the most when you have divots or other areas that are irregular. You can make that work either smooshing again or just by flipping and then fusing to around 1400 to 1450F / 760 to 790 C. If yo...

I have had some luck flipping a piece over and refiring. It's worth a try.

Re: Scrap into sheet?
Well, not the most beautiful glass you've ever seen, but you can get it to fuse together, a bit thicker than normal and with lots of areas with lines and such.
Never trying doing it as a pot melt, but that might work better than just putting the scraps in the kiln and firing.

It would work with lots of other colors that react. It will work much better with powder than with fine frit.

Arrowmont in Tennessee had a potter's wheel that had been converted to a lap wheel. They had an iron disk laminated on top of the aluminum surface. Worked fine last time I was there, several years ago.

Re: Coke & Corona Bottle Slump
Thanks for your input! Just curious, why 1,000 instead of 950? Because different glasses have different annealing temperatures. 950 is ok for art glasses like Bullseye and Spectrum, but 1000 is best for window and bottle glass. Also, sometimes I peek in (I can’t see much, it’s a tiny window) & ...

Re: Coke & Corona Bottle Slump
That schedule looks pretty much ok to me, except I would anneal bottles at 1000, not 950. About the only thing I can think of for you to try would be to see if you can get the slump at a slightly lower top temperature. That might help with the paint burning off, but my guess is that the paint is goi...

Re: Coke & Corona Bottle Slump
Many bottles use a paint that doesn't behave well in the kiln. Reds are especially problematical. If you give us the schedule you used we may be able to make some suggestions, but my guess is that changing the schedule won't do much -- it's just the nature of the paint used on the bottles themselves.
