Finishing ~ Cold Working ~ Cerium Oxide

Postby Goldeneye » Thu Jan 09, 2014 4:41 pm

At present I cold work using a bevel star lap wheel to trim my pendants finishing with Cerium Oxide polish rather than Fire polishing.. I really like the 'finish' and crispness this gives..

Cerium oxide has soared in price, any suggestions as to an alternative that I could use on my Bevel Star Lap wheel?

Any other suggestions that would give me the same results as I get by hand finishing greatly appreciated.

Try cork. I get a nice gloss from that. Leather is supposed to do much the same thing, but the only time I tried one it expanded and made a mess.

has anyone tried rouge (it comes in white, brown, green, and red) on a leather strop or belt? you don't use water with it, but charge the strop with the rouge. that's how they put mirror finishes on tooling, for instance, so should work well on glass.

You could try tin oxide or tripoli, but I think they're like pumice, takes you so close you still need a tiny dazzle from cerium. cuts the amount down though.
