Tile saw question

Post by Jane Morgan »

I've searched the archives but didn't find an answer to my particular question. I recently sold my small tile saw (an mk470 1/2 hp) because it was too small for what I'm currently doing. In searching the archives I see that the QEP saws are recommended by a number of people and in researching them I found two models: the 60020 and the 61024. The 60020 has a 2hp motor and rpms of 1750/2450 (dual speed) and the 61024 has a 1.5 hp motor and rpm of 3450 (same specs as the mk100/101). The price differential is $70 ($300/$370). Both come with a stand and a basic blade. What difference, if any, does the higher rpm make? I think it might make a little in the amount of chipping, assuming the same good blade on each, but I'm not sure if this is faulty thinking. Thoughts and recommendations are most welcome!
Thanks very much,
Jane

I believe that the higher RPM will turn faster and with the right blade you can saw quickly through 4 inch glass. :D

Just an update: I purchased the QEP Brutus 1.5hp (3450rpm) tile saw and am very happy with it. I finally got it outside today (its been too cold to work outside!) and checked it out. After cutting 1/4" strips of tile and doing other things to ensure accuracy, I successfully cut a 1/4" thick piece of glass 16" long in no time at all. :D I only have the tile saw blade and know I need to order a glass blade from HIS, but so far I'd recommend this saw.

Just curious why you went with the 1.5 hp?

Hi Laurie,
I did quite a bit of research on this board and also read Jonathan Schmuck's book on coldworking and it seemed that the MK100/101 are the standards by which all other tile saws are compared. Several people on this board recommended the QEP with the same spec's, but for a lot less money, so that's what I ended up getting. So far, so good. :)
best,
Jane

Jane, curious what your purchase requirements were as I'm shopping for a saw. I have the craft saws we proly all have (taurus 3, inland) but need a beefy one to take on cutting lots of 1/2 " bars.

Any QEP (or other saw) feedback appreciated!

Hello Caco,
I wanted a saw that could cut thick glass (pattern bars) with ease and that didn't cost a fortune. I searched the archives of this board and a number of people recommended the QEP. I looked and subsequently purchased this one:

http://www.amazon.com/QEP-61024-24-Inch ... s+tile+saw

It has the same specifications as the MK100/101 but cost a lot less (I bought it for $332 on sale and free shipping). It came with the stand and a blade (for tile not glass, but I've used it on glass and its okay). So far I'm very happy with it!

Thanks for the quick reply Jane! I'm looking for a rugged get it done saw too, one that works quickly with my bars as I cut them into pendants about 1/2" thick. I planned on calling HIS tomorrow for a glass blade recommendation.

Spoke with HIS, looks like the QEP diamond blade option is the $129 Superlok Glass+ 10" with 5/8" arbor ...Jane, I assume the blade that comes with the QEP takes out more glass (and nicks) than needed, is this your finding?

I love them both . You can chose. Mind you I do think the MK lasts longer so perhaps that answers your question. If they are good for a class they are GREAT for the artists who do ALOT of cutting for hours in a row. You hands get really sore if you have to spend hours and hours when it could take 1/2 the time with the right blade. They have a J in the rim which allows for smooth finish and good chomping of thick glass. Better for 1 inch and thicker . Speeds up the process by so very very much. Les

Thanks! My budget is going towards a larger kiln so wasn't looking for a huge saw cost. But cutting is getting very old on my swap top!

Hi Caco,
Yes, the blade that comes with the saw chips more than I'd like it to, but its not too bad. I plan on ordering a glass blade soon.

I agree, Les. I had a smaller saw and had a glass blade - it was so much better!
