French Cleats or Hanging glass panels

Post by Havi »

Hello everybody,
happy holidays ....
I am supposed to hang 3 glass panels, one above the other. They are about 13" by 17". Four layers of 3 m'm Bullseye glass. For me, each panel is quite heavy.
Can anyone calculate their weight for me?

The real question however is the way I should present them.
The easiest option is to hang them on appropriate hooks .
But one of my friends told me, the he would have liked to see them hanging without anything on their front. This reminded me of the other option - hanging them on French cleats .

The problem is I do not know if and where I can order cleats here, in Israel. Also I do not know whether I should order them from a blacksmith, or from a plexiglass person. Where can I order French cleats in USA , so that I can get them relatively quick?

Additional problem is. What glue should I be using to glue the part that connects to the glass - that will be strong enough to carry the panels without letting them fall down.

I would be so very grateful for any response that will help me!

Many thanks in advance,

HaVi

Havi,
I really do like these!

sandblast or rough up back of cleat, you do not have to sandblast glass, just make sure it is clean.
use a tiny bit of adhesive--- more is NOT better!

anyone with a table saw can make french cleats. try a home handyman, or a shop that makes kitchen cabinets.

it's basically a piece of wood or plexiglass, maybe around 10cmx20cmx8mm, cut in half the long way on a 45 degree angle. screw one side to the wall, glue the other side (i use silicone) to the glass. they should cost literally pennies to make.

Thanks, Dear Friends,
I'll try make some experiment, make / order cleats, and try hang something.

If it works - I'll get more cleats for the 'real' pieces.
Many thanks,

HaVi
