Silver Foil

Post by Pat K. »

I've searched but am unable to find any information on using silver foil on the top layer of glass. Is it food safe or should I be sandwiching it in between two sheets. Thanks for any help.

Since Silver is commonly used in eating utensils I would imagine that it is food safe. Dont see why being on glass would change that.

If not sandwiched will it not be subject to the atmosphere, tarnish and wear in other ways? :-k

Yes, if not sandwiched it will tarnish, lose its silver sheen, and become brownish-black in a few years.

If you want to avoid this, I would cap with clear or cover with a thin layer of clear powder.

Where do you get silver foil? I went to Michaels and that did not look like real silver to me.

The hobby stores typically only sell real copper, everything else is aluminum.

Just about any art glass supplier will have silver foil. Amazon has pure silver foil, too.
