Effect of Samarium on kiln elements

Post by LisaDC »

Hello,

Someone has requested to use my glass kiln for annealing of glass samples with a special coating. I'm concerned about potential effects on the kiln elements or fumes.
The fellow says he has samples of 20x30 cm (8x12 in) float glass, which must be annealed at 600 C (1112 F) for 5 minutes each.
"The samples have a coating of Silicon-Aluminum-Oxygen-Nitrogen (SiAlON) and contain less than 1% Samarium (Sm). The SiAlON coating is already widely used in the glass industry as an anti-scratch coating. We have previously annealed samples with this coating and we did not see any adverse effects on the kiln".

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

kind regards,
Lisa

according to what I have read samarium oxidizes at 150C,. I doubt it would have any effect on your kiln seeing as how it is such a very small amount, 1% of that thin coating on the glass has got to be almost indistinguishable.
