FUSING HOUSE NUMBERS

Postby suspendedglass » Sun Mar 15, 2020 12:17 pm

I was wondering if anybody has done this successfully?

I have tried carving Kaiser Kiln block, but the numbers ended up with tons of spikes! I only had 1" thick piece and cut it in half to give 1/2" depth. I used frit and glass combo to fill the carved out area.

Now I am simply tracing the numbers on shelf paper and attempting to fill the numbers with cut glass. I know I need to pile at least 2 layers of glass. I am sure, because there is no dam around the traced letter they will probably come out irregular.

I was wondering if there was an inexpensive way to form a little dam around the numbers and then fill with glass.
Would using simple kids plastercine (sp) from dollar store work? I was going to try cutting 1/4" thick fiber paper but I know glass will spike. Any other ideas, thoughts or suggestions that will not involve spending a fortune?
Thanks in advance, LInda

Kids plasticene in the Kiln?? I hope your kidding! You have a bit of a learning curve to get these numbers cast. Your dam material must be thinner than the final cast glass in order to eliminate needles. It actually is very simple to accomplish what you wish but I think you need to expand your knowledge base first. There is no quick easy answer to all your challenges. A couple of classes or individual instruction from an experienced fuser will point you the way.

Slumpy's has individual molds with numbers that you could order. Good luck. Joyce
