what grit to start with after cutting slab with tile saw

Post by Chelseaglass »

I tried searching the archives and may not have used the proper prompt words. I am trying to determine what grit of diamond pad or loose grit to use on piece of glass (no lap wheel available) to begin with in order to take my Results diamond blade cut edge to a clear finish so the light comes through the edge to illuminate the piece. I tried hitting the edge with a 400 grit pad but that just resulted in visible scratches.....

Great question, id like to know as well. I have a 24 flat lap so which disk would be best? I've yet to use the flat lap much as Ive been so busy with a SG commission.

There is a normal progression like 80 . . 220 . . 400 . . polish. There are many variations.
One thing you should do is grind a tiny bevel on the edge to reduce chipping.
If you grind extensively you may have to redo it. Polish the bevel too, looks great.

well it depends on the blade on the tile saw ... my blade is easily a 200 finish so I start there.

Janet,

That makes total sense! I will have to find out since there is no information on the saw blade. Thank you.

cut a scrape slice of glass and test different grits on different places on the slice... if it leaves a deeper scratch than the tile blade did then go one grit higher to start polishing
