I think any organic liquid can get moldy and funky. The other side of the coin is that I don't think this is much of a problem for most places. I would not be surprised to hear that people who live in damp moldy places, have more problems than people in most other climates. I have kept containers of liquid CMC around for years with no problems. Come to think about it, I once got a spray medium (CMC is the primary ingredient) sent to me in a metal can. That can rusted terribly and killed the medium. The same stuff in a plastic container is good, though.

I don't know the formula for Glasstac. Klyrfire is a 3% solution of CMC. Glasstac has more.

Bert, do you know what the other 97% is made of?

Google. If you type Klyr-Fire MSDS into it, you'll find out . . .

Hi All,

I think there may be different formulations of CMC. I bought a container of cmc in japan and upon making a batch , it would go moldy within a couple of weeks....which kind of put me off using it as a glue for laying up projects....now here in the US, I bought some from my ceramic supplier which has lasted for several months... So my edumacated guess is there are different grades or purities....further from what I know , Japan is sort of opposed to additives, nitrates etc...so maybe their CMC is more pure and doesn't contain mold inhibitors or extenders. Another possibility is the minerals of the tap water, along with a previous poster's suggestion that climate may play a part.

Climate, the water you're using, the container you're using, how long it's open and what happens to be floating by while it's open, if the window's open when you're mixing it up, if there's mold in your studio, all kinds of things. I think the CMC powder I buy has nothing but CMC, and sometimes a batch gets moldy, sometimes it doesn't.

I find I get more life out of a batch if I use a sterilized container, i.e. I boil it the way I would canning jars. Less trouble to simply add a drop of bleach to the mix, and use no more than I'll be needing for a couple of weeks.

I wonder if methyl cellulose is a short term for carboxymethylcellulose, or are they different? I tend to think they are the same.

Hi All,

Wikipedia , written by someone(s) with way more insight than me, seems to reference several variations of CMC so it seems to be luck of the draw, as to what we buy and where we buy it and then how it behaves once we mess with it.

There's food grade and 'other'.
