Frit balls with flat tops

Hi,

What is the best way to make 1/8 inch thick frit balls with a flat top (in other words, I need oval-shaped, flattened 'balls'...):

1- Make the frit balls (full fuse) then flatten them under a KW-coated dam that will fall onto 1/8 inch fiber paper strips during a 2nd full fuse

or

2- Make the flattened balls in one full fuse step by placing my small glass pieces under the KW-coated dam held onto the fiber strips.

I know option #1 will work. I am just not sure whether the edges of the 1/8 inch thick glass pieces (i.e., those not in contact with the dam & the kiln shelf) would round up in option#2. Trying to save energy!

Cut long octagons (or hexagons) and fuse them, but stop the fuse before they draw up completely into balls?

Just curious -- after you make these flat-top balls, how will you use them?
