Sounds silly but can I put a picture inbetween two pieces of glass. Would it burn out? or worse cause a fire?

To burn it needs oxygen. Without oxygen it will become charcoal. With oxygen it will become fire.

The organics will usually burn out in the kiln and may or may not leave a bit of ash behind--most layups aren't airtight and at burnout temps (600-700F) the glass hasn't yet softened and sealed in/out air. The real question is, though, what else the paper leaves behind. Some inks can stain the glass or leave a residue, and some types of paper have clay or other coatings that can also leave residue.

Also depends on how much you're using. A postage stamp-sized piece of blank cheap newsprint probably won't do much. A big piece of glossy cardstock with a photograph and text printed on both sides might. Some of the inks might stain the glass and cause a visible reaction; others won't, so you might or might not get a nice result.

If it causes a fire, it's in a kiln, which is a pretty fireproof place. I wouldn't worry unless you're burning something like the Sunday New York Times and the flames start to lick out of the vents. There is a chance that combustion could be fast enough to jolt the glass and cause it to shift position but again, you'd need a bunch of paper relative to the amount of glass.

If you're trying to fuse a photograph into glass and have it look like a photograph, search this site for "screen printing," "photo transfers," and "print-making." You'll find a fair amount of information on how to get images into glass. The folks who own this site have written a book about these techniques that's worth a look.

I have to laugh, Cynthia. Many years ago, my girlfriend was a novice jeweler. She decided to make a silver casting of a tiny plastic moose. She used the lost, little plastic moose method, of casting. She invested it with sprues and stuck it in the kiln. A fire ensued that almost killed the elements in the kiln. I have had and loved the silver moose for 30 some years. That was the last time she employed the technique...

I've taken a piece of BE thin fire did a small drawing with pencil and placed it between a base of black and clear top and it turned out fine.

You could try putting kiln paper (eg bullseye thinfire) between 2 sheets of glass and fuse all that together.

I have no idea what might happen.

Glass line sells a line of colored papers that are ment to be fired between sheets of glass. Guess what it's made of?? Thin fire!!!
