Creating Deep Slump Reactive vessel

Post by twin vision glass »

Well I have been having a wonderful time experimenting with Reactive Glass of late and created a large thick colour bar that I sliced up ( sad to say my saw pump finally quite on me :? ) but could not waite so hooked up a hose and kept on going) Anyways, really excited to try a deep slump vessel that is totally different from inside outside. I am really excited also to create a large cast piece that will slump in a large mold at my friends place in Elkford , B.C. Can hardly waite for that. But for now , here is the beginning of the deep slump piece. Do not usually like to use fiber but did not have the right Zircar mold so here goes nothing

While the other piece for the deep slump is firing , I have started another larger piece that will just have a nice soft slump into my mold I made. Will take awhile to finish this one though but no worries, I am patient. Les
**All the slices are from the same colour bar so I am pleased that I could create a few pieces out of it.

(the fusing process went nicely , now it is in the kiln on the first slump before the next 2 deep slumps. ) I have found a BEAUTIFUL piece of Maple and have cut into 3 pieces and am using them for the bases. It is so lovely and soft and a nice match for the vessels . So much character in the wood fits with the gold and lines in the glass. I look forward to seeing the dark inside and the lightness on the outside. When the gold stretch's it will hopefully looked stretched and match the wood. Here is another vessel that is not a deep slump on a piece of the maple

First slump is good , now second deeper slump is set up and will go on tomorrow . The large flat panel will be finished soon and ready for flat firing. Hope I will be able to slump it though as it is alittle large for my kiln , and pray to slump in friends kiln. That would be so great. Les

Well patience is a friend today . I am happy with the very different look from inside to outside and the reactions are strong. BUT I love the gold and silver side.

I am going up into the mountains tomorrow to find a beautiful stone in our quarry called Black Alabaster and will be making a base for it out of that. The polishing and sawing of the stone is almost as fun as sawing and polishing the glass.

Husbands are so wonderful when they retire and get excited tromping through the Gypsum mine to collect beautiful BLACK ALABASTER . It is a lovely stone to carve and polish and saw and is a rare form of the gypsum-based mineral. It has wonderful light , medium and dark grey veining just like I am trying to achieve with the reactive glass and am now going to embark on a whole new series called:" Glacial Striations" as living with a mountain guide has made me very aware of the movement of glaciers across the stones.

I love. love this vessel! The stone base is perfect for it too. I enjoyed seeing the photos of the layup and then being able to match them up with the finished product. Thank you so much for sharing the process.

Thanks so much Vonon. The pictures are poor but I only have an old camera that is not a good one , BUT at least you can get the idea of how it was inspired . Les

I hope when the piece is slumped it will show the underside as it is really interesting . It is flowing nicely into the name of the Series " Glacial Striations"

I thought I would create a really large deep slump mold for a large vessel form I am working on. I could find some nice large slumping molds out of ceramic but not this deep so thought I would make a mold mix 6 one. Creating it over metal is perhaps alittle tricky as the MM6 wants to shrink while drying , but I just had to keep putting on layers and if a slip came up , just painted on more MM6. So will see how it comes off the mold . 24 inchs wide by 12 inchs deep. An old wonderful metal shape dear Patty Gray had given me many years ago. Always kept it because \I loved the shape. Mind you here it looks alittle like a helmet but it won't when it is finished.

Here is a better photo with the other first slump molds by it and the ring that will hold the glass on the flat fire.

Leslie,
The two slumped bowls are gorgeous, especially the deep inverted bell shape. Were you able to slump it in one step or did it take a series of ever deeper molds? Is it, or they commercially available molds or did you make them yourself? How wide and deep is the bell shaped mold? Thank you for your great work.

Warren
PS I do have Patty Gray's sink slump mold.

Thank you so kindly Warren,
The lovely larger mold is from " BLUE FIRE MOLDS " one of the sponsors here. It is only 22" inchs wide though so I have a larger ring on lay on top of it to slump bigger pieces. I also make the birds nests in it with fiber so I can put a 20 inch square on it and let it slump into it that way. The bell shaped one is only 20 inchs and from Bullseye. Nice bell but not big enough for me. I am going to slump my flat fired piece all in one as I do not care if it tips abit as that is exactly what I love . Sits so different and you can really see inside the glass vessel when done and no one piece will ever be the same which I love. BUT if you want it to slump perfect then I suggest the 2 slumps. I did create the deep ( metal mold) to be tapered on edge by putting plastercine around the edges for a nice gentle slope for the glass panel to sit on.) I will hope to slump in a week so will keep you posted. BUT check out the BLUE FIRE MOLDS.

New 24inch vessel flat fired. Now to prime the deep mold out of MM6 and try a one firing slump. Hmm! The cane that I created with reactive glass (in an old MM6 mold I cut a 2 inchs square out of) for a drop in the large skutt kiln has slices into this piece. Les
