Not so long ago, I used to ask my granny to sit in front of my old Soviet kiln, read a book she likes and check the temperature every now and then: "if it drops 5dgrC below 'X' turn it on, if it gets 5dgrC above 'X' turn it off" - and so on for 2-3 hours and then off, relying on insulation and sand around the mould. These were all small pieces, not because I knew annealing but because that kiln was small anyway. ...so granny happily sponsored me with half the money for my Bentrup controller some years later for my present kiln...
