Why don't you use wallpaper paste? If you go to the casting section and follow some of the links in the posts you'll find several casters who use wallpaper paste instead of pate de verre glue. I have never tried it but it seems to me that if you're having such a hard time with the glue, this may be a solution for you.. i.e. alternate products.... easily found...
