A huge bubble

Post by jbkramer »

Hi, I'm new at slumping. Was successful with the first piece, a 6" round bowl. Then I wanted to slump another one, but first had to fire this piece flat. After the second firing, I found this huge bubble at one end. (See picture?) Since I want to slump that piece, should I break open the bubble or will it go away after being slumped? It now has 4 layers of glass. Please advise.

Thanks,
Judy

Welcome to the board, Judy!

First, if you go back to the first topic in the newcomer forum and read it, you'll find we need quite a bit of info to help you.

From the small bubbles that have risen and collapsed, and the large bubble, I'm guessing you are firing too fast and too hot, both beginner errors. Plus, the decor on top probably helped trap the small bubbles. Once we have the firing schedule and other info we will have better answers for you.

looks like you have the dichro between a layer of black and clear. If so, that's why you are trapping so much air.

Duh!!! I should've caught the dichro in the middle, myself!

BTW, Judy, you might want to save the expensive dichro until you have the process down a little better. Glass is expensive enough when you are learning!!
