gold wire for pendants?

Post by Lyn »

Some of my dichro pendants would look better with a gold bail. I've tried 14 K gold wire between layers, it held up for the firing (unlike sterling silver wire) but became so black I can't seem to get it clean. A local jewler suggested a higher 22 K gold. Has anyone tried that?
Another suggestion was to get silver or nickle plated gold. Locally there is onle a place that does not specialize in jewlery with a $45.00 minimum and no over the phone quote.
I haven't tried brass or bronze, how do they fire? Just the look of gold would be fine with me. I have a great little book about patina's but can't find it at the moment. Any suggestions?

There's a site which may have something suitable - http://www.wire-scuplture.com which sells a vast range of precious and base metal wire. They're in MS, sorry, I don't know what state this is the abreviation for. I was looking for a UK supplier of silver wire to include when fusing and found this, so I'll be ordering some soon. What guage would you recommend for pendants?

Cheryl,
I used 20 gauge for the 1 inch round pendants.
I could not get that website to display?

There's a typo in the name which is why it wouldn't display for you.

Try this link:

If you make your own jump rings from the gold wire how do you close them? If you solder, you'd have to have gold solder, right? Or do you close them with a torch or something?
