Upon the Mere - A New Bowl

Post by Sharol »

I'm still exploring combining my combings with other warm glass techniques. At the suggestion of a new friend, I eliminated the contrasting rim for this piece. This change, and learning to work with S96 Ivory Opal, made it necessary to once again alter my slumping schedule! Thank you Cynthia for your wise counsel in working through this :) I apologize for the less-than-good photos. I had difficulty with glare and couldn't seem to get the light right.

I love how apparently random the combing looks, when I know it was anything but random!

These are some of the best combed pieces I have seen. I love your colors and the simplicity of your compositions.

I just have to say that "Upon the Mere" is on it's way to my home right now. I've followed Sharol's work closely for some time and finally asked her if she would do a commission piece for me. I wanted a "triple threat" piece with crackle, wire melt and combing. Also wanted to see the edges that each of these techniques reveal. After discussing color, design, size, etc., Sharol proceeded to build a bowl for me. She even sent samples of the old and new colors of ivory to make sure the slight color change was OK. I'm so happy with the whole experience and can hardly wait for the Fed Ex delivery.

Thank you all for your input! and kind comments!

Vonon - It was so interesting to see how the edge turned out on this piece. Without my usual contrasting rim, you can look well into the layers. I very much like the effect and also that the the wire melt sections of the edge retain the textures of the different glasses it contains. This opens up some great new design possibilities for me to explore!

I also love the edge and not the constraints of a border.

Thank you, Janet. It has been so interesting finding ways to incorporate into my pieces the techniques we learned at ob's workshop last fall. It's hard to believe that a year has already passed!

yes it's been a fast year for sure... I love they way you incorporated the crackle in the piece... you show such confidence in your use of combing the pot melts through the crackle and love that there is a touch of each method. way to go girl

Thank you...and thanks again Cynthia for your help trouble shooting the slumping issues. Actually, the color composition and design were true collaborations for Vonon and me. It was fun, and a great adventure to share :)
