repairing mullite rods

Post by Cheryl »

I hate paying $45 for a replacement mullite rod - the ones that suspend my kiln elements. Does anyone have any thoughts about repairing them? They're hollow (and so even more doggone fragile). Thanks!

I don't know if this will help, but you can use hollow quartz glass rods instead, placing the coil inside the rod. It's cheaper and more efficient.

That usually means replacing the entire system. You can try heating the bent parts of the elements with a torch to straighten them out and then insert them into the quartz tubing but I'd start by spending the $45 (or find another supplier).

Great link Bert. This company is the ticket for all your kiln needs - I really like their very affordable stock coils for our home-made kilns!

They can make any element for any kiln, on a custom basis. I heartily endorse them.
