Changing heat settings to manipulate glass

Post by Ellen Demko »

Manipulating glass with programmed firing.....How does turning the kiln off to manipulate glass....back on to reheat....etc.etc. affect the rest of the firing program? My Orton auto fire is retro-fitted. Would I use the manual switches to turn elements off and on? Thanks for any help offered.

Ellen,

I think if you check your Orton manual you'll find it will resume heating up to the top temp in the ramp where the ciruit is interrupted. What I would do is throw the circuit breaker, manipulate the glass, then put the breaker back on. My kiln would just start re-heating back up where it left off.

Good luck.

In most situations turning off the switches will not be a problem for a short time. Many kilns have automatic switches that turn off the elements when the door opens. If you really have questions about your controller, ask Orton. They should say as much.
