electricity usage

Post by scooter riegelsperger »

Does anyone know how to calculate electricity usage for a kiln with digital control? Does it require a special meter to be attatched? Trying to figure how much it costs to operate for a full fuse cycle, slump cycle, & tack fuse cycle. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

There's information about how to do this in the old archives.

Good luck!

It's pretty difficult to guage, because you don't really know what percentage of the time you are on. The power it takes to fire will vary depending on the weight if the glass load in the kiln.

You can take a reading at your electric meter before and after a firing, then take a reading on a typical day for the same time period and subtract that from the first reading and you should have a clue.

Your power costs are the least of your expenses.

I did a writeup on this in the archives. Here is a link:

Post if you have any more questions. Be sure and read the full thread
as I have a typo in the main description. These geriatric moments tend to come more often these days!
