The fastest configuration is, sufficiently powered, top elements only. This heats flat glass evenly, allowing you a quicker heatup without mishap. I don't really understand why side elements are a boon, except for making tall invested castings, long drop slumps, or annealing very thick glass. I am of the opinion that kiln makers include them because they have always made side fired kilns, not because it is a better idea for glass fusers.

Thank you all for the information. I now realize why I have had some firing issues since only using side elements. I read the manual that came with the kiln and is not at all clear on which elements to use. I am guessing the kiln is equipped with the side elements for ceramic firing??
Thanks Cynthia for the lead on the BE site for "know your kiln". There is a good test recommended which I will try immediately with one firing with side elements and one firing with top elements.
